Re: OT: USNWR released for 2012

I'll talk some trash that has nothing to do with where Maine is (probably properly) ranked....

How is a crappy publication like USNWR responsible for determining the quality of America's top educational institutions?

Idk... I think its pretty crappy also. But its relevance cannot be ignored. A lot of high school kids look at these things. I think this one is most accepted one also

Agreed...regardless of the quality of the analysis, fact of the matter is, tons of people look at this publication.

Nice job by the other SUNY's...good to see UA also moving up a few spots.

Thats right! Binghamton is a solid school and the best SUNY university center according to this ranking. Its been lingering in the 80-90 positions of the USNWR report for a while.

Hopefully SBU can keep climbing and take that away. lol

Buffalo is #106

I agree that people look at it. I also have a ton of respect for schools that basically tell USNWR to **** off. St. John's in Annapolis is muuuuuuuuch better than the 133rd best liberal arts school in the country, but they refuse to take any part in reporting data.

I just think it's a ridiculously stupid way to gauge anything at all. It creates an environment where kids are making dumb decisions like "Well, I got a $15,000 grant to the #45 school, which has the exact major I want, but I also got into the #20 school, and I feel like that is too big a gap to turn down."

It also creates an environment where the schools game data. When's the last time a school (particularly a grad school- looking at you, law schools) accurately reported its employment data? Two schools (one being Emory) admitted to outright lying about SAT scores.

What colleges kids apply to should be a personal choice that has more to do with finding a good fit, getting a good financial aid package, recognizing that a school may have a niche in a specific field, etc. than it does trying to get into the "best." Additionally, hiring should have more to do with the individual applicant than with the artificial prestige of the applicant's alma mater. If an accounting firm or wherever gets 500 applications for a job, it's just going to grab maybe 20 kids from the top 30 schools to interview. Newsflash: you can coast through Boston University and learn nothing, just like you can grind it out and get a great education at UMaine.

Agreed...ones willingness to learn regardless of the school has more to do with future success then what school you hold a diploma from. All things being equal, the school WILL probably swing things in your favor but all things are not equal.

Unfortunately... everything in life has rankings. That just the way our model works. Rankings for best hospitals, for best college football team, best university, top law firm, Human development Index rankings, Rankings by Gross domestic product, ... and so on. None of them are truly accurate at providing which service/country/institution is better than the other. But we still use this rankings all the time. Its the way our system works. We have set up a whole system based on reputation. But reputation only talks about the past, not really the future...
