Hurricane Sandy

Hope everyone is staying safe tonight! We had a lot of rain and high winds in Boston but NYC sounds terrible...

Re: Hurricane Sandy

Well. New York is far from destroyed. You are exaggerating a bit there nycwolf. Flooding through low-lying areas in NYC ocurred (Red Hook, Battery, Lower East Side, Parts of the FDR drive) but for the most part we are good. I was at work today (Hospital for Special Surgery) next to the FDR Drive until late afternoon and things in NYC looked fairly calm.

New Jersey indeed got pounded heavily and my relatives there loss power early. I would say NJ go the worst part of it when it comes to flooding and material loss. Long Island is facing much of the same issues but I still think it could've been worst.

New York City got lucky that most of the rain that feel to the west of the eye of hurricane didn't fall in the city. For the most part we are dealing with heavy winds and storm surge.

I date a reporter...and I see all the reports as they come. NYC IS destroyed...he is not exaggerating. It is because of what NY is that it is considered destroyed. 3-4 feet of flooding on the NYSE floor, Battery Park overrun over sandbag seawalls, train stations completely flooded from the East River (look at the pics from Hoboken's Path Station an see an elevator shaft exploding with water...that' what the stations look like in lower NYC) and 23rd street under 4-5 feet of water.

Those are serious issues. Add in NYU Medical, which is right off the FDR, is evacuating patients and shutting down entire wings because of power and communication issues. Coney Island Hospital (about a stones throw from where I grew up) was on fire last I heard with NO access for Firefighters even though an engine company is less than 2 minutes by car away.

The Sandy Hook buoy rose to over 32.5 feet...which is FRIGGING INSANE...I don't think I ever came back on fishing trip through there with bad weather and the buoy any higher than 20 feet.

Now let's throw in the nearly 700,000 people of NYC alone without power...nearly 1 in 12 people. There are no lights from 39th street down to Battery Park. That's 1/3 of Manhattan.

And all the tunnels, bridges, and airports in NYC are closed. Basically, the most important City in the world is shut down...something that did not happen during the sad events of 9/11/

Think about that!

NYC Emergency Prep, which I am very connected to, is getting 10,000 calls per half-hour. That's insane.

Re: Hurricane Sandy

alright Dane. You are correct. I live and work in NYC but again, like always... you know much better about NYC than all of us... ITS DESTROYED.

That's why I gotta head back to work tomorrow at 71st Street and York Avenue (Right next to the FDR) I'll be surprised if I find anything other than ruble or 10ft of water...

You have learned pretty well from your girlfriend reporter I must say. You almost sound like every other sh***y reporter with the way you wrote that...

I've experienced two true hurricanes in my life:

Hurricane Georges CAT 3 in 1998 which swept across the Dominican Republic and the rest of Caribbean and now Hurricane Sandy CAT 1 landfall which did damage in NYC, but not severe, and more extensive damage in the NJ/MD/D.C area.

--->

NYC will transition to normality for the most part on the oncoming days as expected from any hurricane. Let the storm pass, then clean up some low lying areas on Zone A & B, tunnels, subways, fires (i.e Breezy Point fire) and lastly resume the service accordingly. this city wasn't planned for Hurricanes so is comforting to know that there was little damage in a city of more than 8 million residents

Most of the City of New York (NY + Outer Boroughs) have electricity and ConED took preventive measures to knock power down in parts of Manhattan to avoid REAl destruction (the exception being a substation at 14th street which exploded and caused unplanned outages)...

As I said, we should be back in business before the end of the week. My uncle who works for the MTA informed me that they have been sleeping at work since sunday night with a large team of employees to put the system back up asap, the NYSE will open Wednesday, and power restoration efforts will start as soon as the low pressure system moves out of our area

Now, NJ/Suburbia outside of NYC is an entirely different story.

Re: Hurricane Sandy

As someone who's family owns beachfront homes- literally right off the boardwalk- in Atlantic City, NJ the most important thing is people's safety and no loss of human life. Material things can be replaced and repaired.

Logan Airport should be real fun for me tomorrow morning. But that should be the least of my worries relative to the destruction in other places.

Suns out right now in Boston.

Re: Hurricane Sandy

Did UMBC, Stony Brook or Hartford get damaged? They are the most likely to get hit.

Albany could be getting some flooding I suppose.

Re: Hurricane Sandy

Just got back from work. Not many people in the streets but I'm glad I was able to help out in the Hospital today. One of the picture that Patch posted showed the Hospital I work on (Hospital for Special Surgery) and the high tide flooded much of the FDR which goes below it. It was mostly back to normal by the day, that area is Zone C which is prone to flooding in situations like these

I know many people don't believe in climate change and the warming of the earth... But when you consider a city like New York which was not planned taking into account these hurricanes, if these events start happening more often then this city is gonna have to redevelop itself and move much of its infrastructure to higher grounds. I don't even want to imagine the huge cost of doing this...

Re: Hurricane Sandy

In my town....Weston,CT were are 100% without power. It actually looks like we were attacked. We had HUGE trees fall in our property but fortunately they fell away from our house. Our neighbor had his family hunkered down in he basement and its a good thing as two trees hit his house. This morning I tried to venture out to check on my office/my mom/and my building in Stamford. Couldn't get anywhere more than two streets away in any direction. Finally doing some major zigging and zagging this afternoon we made it to our hotel. We have no running water at our house (well water) so a hotel is essential. They say we should get power back in about 10 days. I am in the newspaper industry and this is the first day in 22 years we did not send out drivers to deliver. The NY Daily News already told me they are not printing tonight either due to extreme damage at their print site.
