They are both good players though,do not get me wrong- and I think Rusin can be a solid scorer- but neither has the "It" that Four had. The innate ability to score-jumpers, floaters, layups, etc.

Don't blame them- as they should. When you're a mid-major that's getting 6K-8K fans then the head mens basketball coach is an important hire.
His first quote after the game "Important that the young kids enjoyed the game,we have another tough one coming up against...Navy". Seems like he doesn't get it.

win ugly > lose elegantly.
Not a great idea to dig that sort of hole, but good to have the experience of being able to dig yourselves out of it. Suggest, though, that we not do that against UConn on Tuesday. |

First thing I was thinking- you're going to give the ball to OD 23ft from the basket with like no time left? Crazy. Even if he catches it- what the heck is he going to do that far away from the hoop? Hymes should have just driven to the hole and gotten what he could or kicked out.

Re: SEASON OPENER: Vermont @ Siena 11-9
Should be noted- we played TERRIBLE and still found a way to win. I'll take it- but the offense is worrisome. To win a game like this- what was looking like a sure loss- is great.
I'll take the 3-0 lead on Siena in our 4 game series. See ya next year at Patrick.

Re: SEASON OPENER: Vermont @ Siena 11-9
Four is a franchise type player and he will be sorely missed. I expected a bit more from Rusin and Blue tonight. Frankly I expect more from Rusin and he's proven he can score at the D1 level. Both had some wide open looks and IIRC each only hit one shot. That type of production is not going to get it done. Maybe Kilpatrick needs more opportunity. He needs some work defensively but I like the way he plays on offense. He's good at finding the open man under the hoop...I'd like to see him look for his shot more.

Re: SEASON OPENER: Vermont @ Siena 11-9
I didn't see the entire game, just like the last 5 min maybe but O'Day looked like he had a nice night in his college debut against one of the best big men in the country. I'll take 9/6 from him every night.
That pass to Voelkel was sweet. The kid is very talented and highly skilled. I'm saying this because I had to point out something else positive besides the Sandro game winner

Perspective. It's one game, first game on the road, bunch of kids playing their first official game together for the first time. I'm pretty bullish on Rusin, and I think Blue will eventually get comfortable and definitely be an asset in conference play. That all being said, nobody should be looking for replacements to Four McGlynn in either of these players because you're just not going to find it.

Re: SEASON OPENER: Vermont @ Siena 11-9
O'Day had 2 blocks as well. 9pts, 6 boards, and 2 blocks. Not bad.
I was also happy with the way Elbaum played, from what I saw. Made the right choices, took the ball hard to the hole on that layup. 4 boards and 1 assist as well. Nice night for Josh. Need more scoring out of Rusin and Rugg. Luke needs to shoot better than 4/13 as well, but not worried about those three right now- it will come.

Re: SEASON OPENER: Vermont @ Siena 11-9
Just got back from an exciting evening in Albany. What a game. At first I thought that UVM had left their offense in Burlington, the first 12 minutes were just horrendous, I'm not sure if it was jitters or what, but I think they threw up 3 air balls in like a 5 minute span, to say nothing of the litany of traveling calls and stupid TO's against.
But the Defense played well, and besides Hymes just lighting them up from deep and OD doing some work inside, they were able to hang around. I was worried that as the 2nd half dragged on that every time UVM would get within striking distance, Siena would pull away once more. I thought O'Day did alright for his first time out, the pass to Voelkel late for that layup was sick. Obviously not pleased with the production from the 2, but it's only 1 night. As far as Sandro goes, kid has ice water in his veins. I thought for sure that his layup with like 50 ticks left was going in, was shocked when it rimmed out, but was glad he was able to make up for it late. The shots weren't falling tonight, but I really liked the grittiness and defensive effort of the team. UCONN on tuesday should be interesting. |
