Garet Beal to Maine
Per the Bangor Daily News, 6'5" swingman Garet Beal of Jonesport, Maine has made a verbal commitment to attend UMaine and sign in the early period next week. Beal was recruited by the likes of UNH, Lafayette, and Ohio U.
Beal is a solidly built kid about 215-220 pounds and a jack of all trades type player. Beal is an accurate shooter from deep, 80% from the line, can play in the open floor and with his back to the basket. Good basketball IQ and has fared well against top flight competition on the AAU circuit. Overall a solid get for Maine. Maine is also making a strong push to sign Chris Braley, a 6'3 shooting guard from Newport, Maine who is attending Phillips Exeter Academy. Braley did his official visit 2 weeks ago and reportedly attended Maine's exhibition game vs. Acadia U.(Can.)last weekend. Maine has only 2 scholarships available for 2013-14. |

http://www.goblackbears.com/sports/m...2012-13/roster There are 13 players on scholarship right now (Mackey and Hetterman are not on athletic scholarships!). 2 of those players graduate (Allison and McAllian)........that means there are 2 scholarships available for next season (Beal and ?). |

Re: Garet Beal to Maine
I do not believe so, pretty sure he was a walk-on when he came on.
Maine fans will know better than me if he's a walk-on or not, but I'd be surprised if Beal was a preferred walk-on. Think NERR had him as a Top 25 kid in New England and if not, Top 30. Definitely a scholarship level kid- can't see him walking on to Maine if he could get a D1 ride somewhere.

$1,000 would probably pay for course materials for 1 or 2 classes at UVM.

Re: Garet Beal to Maine
McAllian is on a full ride. He commited the summer before his senior year in high school. A big deal was made because he had not even averaged double figures at BHS his junior year. Then he blew up on the AAU scene. Hit like 7 3's in a national tournament game and Woodward made his pitch.
Maine was recruiting Beal hard for the last 2 years. Pretty sure this is not a walk on situation. Maine should have 1 scholarship available. |

Re: Garet Beal to Maine
NERR makes it sound like he's got a scholarship and signing a NLI:

Re: Garet Beal to Maine
So with 1 left & the possibility of Braley and/or Knight using up his last year of elgibility at UMO for grad school if he graduates on time from ND this spring, then what would Mr. March do? Maybe persuade one of the other stiffs to transfer?

Re: Garet Beal to Maine
The town of Beals is very proud of its basketball tradition and Garet Beal, who is from Beals not Jonesport as stated in the original post, exemplifies the hard work ethic and athletic prowess that has helped propel the Royals tradition through the years.Beal now joins Jan Beal and Sandi Carver in being D1 ballplayers from Beals. Not bad indeed.
