That said- offensively we struggled and could have played much better- as bad as we shot, we were never out of the game. Our defense though, and the Siena game, was very good relatively speaking.

If we made a few more shots....completely different ball game.
UConn was hounding our guards pretty good too. It didn't seem like anyone had time to get a clear 3pt shot off. Props to Blue for stepping up. I hope he gets a starting role in the future. I'm not concerned with Rusin. He will find his range again.

Re: Vermont @ UConn 11-13

UConn defense had a lot to do with UVM's poor offense. UVM could do nothing inside and rushed their outside shots.

That said, UVM played very good defense and rebounded well. UVM foul shooting was better than usual. UConn played their starters right to the end and only had one run all game. It wasn't an easy game for UConn.

Rusin seems to be trying too hard. He needs to let his mind go blank and stroke the shot. He also seems tentative about going to the rim.

Carrissimo does need to shoot more and it's OK for a point guard to be a scorer. He showed how far he has come as a ball handler against UConn, only getting turned twice.

+1- good post.

Yeah, Boatwright and Napier were all trying to score until the whistle stopped.

Our defense has been very good both games.

Next stretch of Northeastern/Yale/Harvard should give us a better idea of exactly what we've got. Offense cannot get worse, I expect it to look different by then.

Also wanted to add, Kevin Ollie is a helluva coach. He's going to be a good one.

Agreed...I'd be happy with 2-1 over that stretch, but I expect us to come out 1-2...will be disappointed with 0-3. Rusin needs to decide if he is going to step up and contribute to the offense or become 2011-2012 Brendan Bald, where we keep saying "He'll shoot out of it" but he never does.

Rusin just had a real difficult time. He made a nice drive to his left in first half but intimidation made him just bank it hard off the glass. Other times he tried to drive was stripped and lost ball out of bounds off of him. I liked that he looks to attack the rim though.

Rushed his shot. When he was open and had a good look in second half it went in/out.

It's only two games in and we don't play UConn every night. I think he'll settle in.

Was real encouraged by Trey Blue's play though. Seemed to be a bit more poised/relaxed out there.

Also Overheard at Gampel by older UConn homer lady behind me. Quite a few blue hairs at the UConn game:

"How are they getting out rebounded by them- they're a WHITE team. This isn't St. Johns or Cincinnati".

WOW....Gotta love rural CT. And by that I mean, it sucks.

HA, I was watching the game with some friends last night and after Blue checked in one of my buddies goes....

"Holy $hit, UVM has a legit black kid this year? I mean sure we have Luke, but this ones legit."

Not saying I didn't atleast chuckle a little bit because.....well you have to, but it always amazes me at the lack of black student athletes at UVM. Not saying it bothers me one bit either way, but you can't help but notice it regardless.

UVM Hoop Cat, thanks for the in-person report. I didn't get to see the whole game and the video quality wasn't the best but from what I saw I agree 100% with your report. In the BFP today Becker talked about the offense and said he's not worried about it the shots will eventually start falling. I love his confidence but I really do think we are lacking a player with a killer instinct on the offense end so far this year. The good news is the defense and rebounding continues to be our calling card and will keep us in most games if we can keep the intensity up throughout the season.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I truly believe Sandro could be our go to scorer. He just has to want to be THAT guy, he's the only one who can take that step. He has all the skills to be able to score 15ppg consistently. He's a PG, but he's a natural SG. Sandro has a sweet stroke and he's sneaky, very sneaky.

I'd love to see him go out and just take the game over, or atleast try to. If he starts taking and hitting shots when he has an open look it will just open up lanes for him and make it that much easier.

He had a stretch in the second half yesterday where he did try to score the ball more. The kid is a natural, he's just not selfish enough.

Sandro shoots a respectable 42% from the floor 37% from deep (he shot 46% his freshman year) and strokes it at 80% from the FT line. He NEEDS to be taking more shots.

Re: Vermont @ UConn 11-13

Trey Blue always looks poised. He benefitted though today from a loose ball open 3, played poor d, and was 2-4 ft's. He didnt play that good. I dont have confidence with him going to the future. He has been playing better than rusin though but it's only been 2 games and no reason to change up yet.

It's not the loss of four but the loss of bald and four that hurts us at the sg position. People like to talk about four, he was the better player but losing two experienced players in the system hurts a lot. We our also struggling on offense so that's another reason people talk about just him.

Apfeld has gone against OD Anisike and UCONN. Give him a break. His percentages will go up. He has been rushing some shots though and its hurt him. He doesnt need to rush. His ft shooting and ability to get to the line helps offset his shooting percentage.

Sandro can't really create shots for himself. He works best off a pick. We could try to run him off some more picks with and without the ball.

rugg played fine I thought. He missed all 3 of his 3's but was 3-4 in 2 pointers.

Voelkel does his best getting lay ups to players when teams play lazy or sloppy d. I really liked his pass to rugg getting him a free lay up.

Blue definitely didn't play poor D. Certainly not relative to other UVM guards. Sandro and Blue were by far the best back court producers.....in this game.

Agree on Apfeld. He will be more than fine in conference play and against other mid-majors. That said, he does still need to develop some more moves on the block with all the touches he will be getting.

As for the UConn game, he gets a pass from me because he was hit, bumped, and mugged on just about every FG attempt in the paint.
