Most teams in the SWAC don't open their home schedule until their first home conference game. Granted the SWAC should be a division 2 conference and its entirely different circumstances then SBU, but there are teams that don't play their first game until after Christmas. I think Monmoth only has 2 home games this year pre Christmas.
if I had a choice of Sacred Heart playing Western Connecticut or not having a home game until January 7, I'd take not having the home game. The ONLY thing you get playing a D-3 is a chance of serious injury.

Right or wrong, many teams across the country do schedule a game with a Div III or Div II opponent. If you just scan the box scores from this weekend I would say you would see 30+ schools that are doing this from all different levels of Div I. When it is tough to get home games I think you have to do what you have to do. Like ecasadoSBU said it's great to see your team on the floor while the competition is awful at least your seeing your team.

The right way to do this is play Mt. Ida as an exhibition game. That way you give home fans something to see and the game isn't a joke regular season game- do that rather than having a closed secret scrimmage.

And it's not uncommon for most mid-majors to open up with anywhere from 1-7 road games before coming home.

I understand what you are saying BUT.....

Why bring in a weak, inept DIII.

A team which had a losing record last year in a weak DIII conference, in fact, last season, they lost to Suffolk (9-16, 6-12 in conference) the weak DIII UNH beat the other night (which also had a losing record last season)?

Long Island has a number of DIIs (a couple solid a couple weak) and numerous DIIIs. If you are going to play someone from a lower division why not bring in someone with at least a .500 record?

Playing someone who you are getting up on by 35 or more in the 1st half does nothing for you.

I understand the need for homegames but SBU is not nearly as isolated as Maine or UNH.

If you are worried about injuries then whats the difference on it being a regular season/exhibition game. Injuries happen in practice (i.e Tommy Brenton), exhibition, and season games so I really don't know where you trying to get at.

Practice- is a normal part of a basketball season, and unless you're Allen Iverson, has purpose and meaning. A regular season game is also a part of a normal basketball season and has purpose and value, obviously.

Playing a D3 opponent in a regular season game has no value- so if a player gets hurt in one of these game- which will be completely unbalanced to begin with, it will have been for nothing.

For the recod i wish they wouldnt play any D2 or D3 teams. I just think injury is to great to waste on stuff like that not to mention you dont take anythin away from it except ron bracey scores 21 points for the 1st time in his D1 career. But for arguements sake i would rather play a bad D2 or D3 if i am going to play them. Imagine the embarressement if you lose to a D2 team and tell your fan base your are trying to compete for a conference title. SBU has been playing Mount Ida for awhile now so i am guessing no matter what Mount Ida's record is they will stick with them.

And I agree, if your going to play a D-3, play a good D-3 school. Staten Island, NYU, Western Connecticut, Eastern Connecticut are all local and all made the D-3 tournament last year. Other local schools such as William Paterson (Wayne, NJ) & Ramapo (Mahway, NJ) are local teams that underachieved last season, but are starting the season in this years top 25 poll. Games like those would be a better test then playing a crap D-3 like Mount Ida.

And btw, Mount Ida is in Newton, MA a suberb of Boston so their not exactly "close" to Stony Brook. Theres about 1,000 schools closer in milage to SBU then Mount Ida is, and most of them are better teams too.

Hate to be trite with "it is what it is" but...it pretty much is. Been happening for several years now, and I know there's a connection between Coach Young and Coach Cabral (whether that's the genesis I'm not sure). Bottom line, everybody hates the game...coaches, players (Pikiell is going to be unhappy even at 80+)and no fun for fans. I'd be shocked if it continues next year...have to think SBU will have something special planned for the home opener in the new arena.
