Re: OT - Grinnell's Taylor Scores 138 points in D3 Game
It's what Grinnell has been doing for years, since the 90s. The coach has been there 24 years. Only now that it gets some notoriety do people recognize it. Will say this...just go look up their record in the D3 NCAA Tournament. They've only been twice, so really, you could say the joke is on them.

38% from 3 is solid- but that's also a pretty run of the mill percentage.

Re: OT - Grinnell's Taylor Scores 138 points in D3 Game
The team's initial goal was for Taylor to break the team record. When he achieved that, they set their eyes on the NCAA record. Considering Taylor got both records, and that was the goal of the team, I wouldn't call it a joke or mockery. I would say they did exactly what they set out to do.

If a guy scores 40 points by halftime............ second half i triple team him. You need to force the ball out of his hands. Horrible coaching by the losing team. Pack two guys in the middle and triple team him. I would never let a kid score than much on me or my team.
He would also get an elbow or two for even trying. |

I go to a D-3 school, so I follow D-3 basketball. 1) I have no clue what division (NAIA, NCAA, USCAA etc) Faith Baptist Bible college is a part of. Their obviously not an NCAA school. 2) Looking at Grinnell's 2 previous box scores, the guy played 16 & 11 minutes. 3) The guy had 0 (0!!!!!!!!!!!!) assists and played 20 more minutes more then anyone else on the team did, so this was obviously planned from the start, which is why the guy from FBBC ended up getting 70 points; let him get his 70, so we can inbound the ball and get Taylor the rock. 4) Imagine the outrage Calipari would have if he left in a starter for 20 more minutes in a game they were winning by 75 just so someone could set a scoring record?? People would crucify him if he did that. 5) I'm thoroughly unimpressed by it. On the surface it looks good, but when you look deep and see it was (probably) planned, not impressed. Here's what division 3 Rhode Island College's Bob Walsh (one of the best coaches in New England) said about it: http://blog.coachbobwalsh.com/2012/11/23/d3-hoops.aspx |

Re: OT - Grinnell's Taylor Scores 138 points in D3 Game
It's the system they run and there's a book about it on Amazon where, if I can find the link, I'll post it. Some schools have tried it: VMI used to run it a few seasons ago when the lead division 1 in PPG, OPPG, 3 pointers made, 3 pointers attempted & 3 point percentage, but not sure their still running it. Castleton state (division 3 school) tries to run it, just not effectively. Btw, here's the link about "the system." Doesn't talk about Grinnell but focuses on Redlands (another D-3 school) and Loyola Marymount with Paul Westhead & Hank Gaithers where the system started: http://www.amazon.com/Coaching-Syste...ell+basketball |

The guy has a formula that is ridiculous. Great article on deadspin about this sham. Here is the formula and comments I think from the book. Here is the link to the full article on deadspin. http://deadspin.com/5962514/d+iii-pl...ag=jack-taylor

Re: OT - Grinnell's Taylor Scores 138 points in D3 Game
To me, this has absolutely NOTHING to do with the system...I know they have run this system for a long time and am familiar with the philosophy of it. It's about allowing a single player to take that many shots (71 3's?!?!?!?) and score that many points. That is what makes a mockery of the game. If a player were to score a huge amount of points in the course of a game, more power to them but that appears to NOT be the case here...it was all about one kid scoring as much as he possibly could...that is what I have a problem with.

Re: OT - Grinnell's Taylor Scores 138 points in D3 Game
Why is that a problem? Are you guys equally offended that Wilt put up 100? If it works, it works... the other team tried double teaming him in some of the clips that I saw and it wasn't working... go to a box and 1 or something...
As long as they are still trying to win the game, which they were, and did... I don't see how this is a mockery of the game.
