OT - Grinnell's Taylor Scores 138 points in D3 Game

This is OT but amazing. In a D3 game, Grinnell's Taylor scored an NCAA record 138 points in a game - article here - http://d3hoops.com/notables/2012/11/...-record-at-138

Also, the losing teams leading scorer had 70!

Re: OT - Grinnell Taylor Scores 138 points in D3 Game

On 108 FG attempts...in one game....WTF.....were they playing basketball still or did it just turn into a video game?

I have to see this video

Re: OT - Grinnell Taylor Scores 138 points in D3 Game

I think is the team that plays a run and gun style where they sub 5 men in and 5 men out like crazy throughout the game. They also press ALL the time. Nuts

You sure his name is Jack Taylor? I read somewhere that Daryl Partin was somewhere out in Iowa.

Re: OT - Grinnell Taylor Scores 138 points in D3 Game

According to the school's broadcast, which I'm watching right now, the plan before the game was to have him score the most points in school history (89). The announcers also said that the team was going for the most points in a half record(104).

So far I'm about five minutes into the game, and Taylor is probably around 3-15 (2-10 from 3) and the pace is unbelievably wild.

Re: OT - Grinnell Taylor Scores 138 points in D3 Game

The fact that the kid took 100+ shots and 71 3's ruins it for me. I'd *hope* someone would score over 100 with that many shots.

Ridiculous.

That's just stupid, If I was a player on that team I would just sit on the floor and watch. I'm certainly not going to bust my ass up and down the court to watch this clown jack up 70 3's. There is no I in team but there is a me.

Agree completely. I don't blame the kid as he was likely doing what he was told, but it would have been nice if he had demonstrated a conscience after the first 50-60 shots or so! But as far as the coach(es) and everybody else connected with this fiasco...what's the matter with these guys? Are you a basketball coach or a carnival barker?

Yep. I imagine kid is just executing on coach's strategy and system, but that amount of shots is a joke and too much of a gimmick for me to take seriously.

I couldn't even imagine taking 20 3's in a game, let alone 71. Think the most I ever took was around 10, if that many- and it was only because I was hitting.

Re: OT - Grinnell Taylor Scores 138 points in D3 Game

Yeah, this whole thing makes me sick actually...seems to make a mockery of the game of basketball. Like UVMHC, I think the most 3's I ever took was around 9 or 10 and again, it's because I was on fire and the team was looking for me. 71 3's?!?!?! That's crap.

You have to give him credit for shooting around 30% from Teaserland regardless

Re: OT - Grinnell Taylor Scores 138 points in D3 Game

38% from three is solid.

So basically they just press all game and try to shoot threes as quickly as possible (while 4 guys crash the boards)... I feel like they've been doing it this way for as long as I've been following college basketball (they play against a lot of DIII Wisconsin schools in my area)

When Loyola Marymount was going nuts in 1989, Coach Paul Westhead said in a 'perfect' game they'd score 240 (I think). Their top was a 181-150 win over US International (an exhibition?). They averaged 122.4 in 1990.

Here's a detailed breakdown by a high school coach - I haven't read the whole thing, but it looked interesting: http://www.angelfire.com/hi5/runandgun/gwhat.html
