Re: This is the last year of BracketBusters
Makes sense to end it given the conferences and schools that no longer participate, and it was a good run for the event, but agree probably a good time to end it.
Will make scheduling interesting games a bit more difficult for us, but that's fine.

Re: This is the last year of BracketBusters
ESPN got greedy...took a great thing and tried to make it greater. No need to have 68 games & 136 mid-major teams playing...at that point, it had lost a lot of what it was originally designed to do.
It's too bad because a lot of those games at the beginning were pretty great... And I agree, when you have teams thinking they are too big now to be a part of it even though their league is a mid-major, it waters it down.

Re: This is the last year of BracketBusters
Having the Marist's and the UNH's of the mid-major world really had no effect on ESPN- ESPN was only putting the however many, 7 or 8 best match-ups on TV anyways.
It got killed IMO by marquee teams like Gonzaga dropping out, then Butler dropped out IIRC, then ultimately the entire CAA quit due to NBC contract, and you've got schools like VCU moving A10. When you've got all these mid-major teams/conferences not participating, it really just stops becoming the Bracketbusters anymore.

I think they did the best job they could- they had a plethora of eligible teams, ensuring surprises got marquee games (like there's no way the 2007-08 Drake team would have been picked preseason to be in the field), and making sure that complete duds didn't get tv games (i.e. 2008-09 Southern Illinois when they finally collapsed). Sure, you ended up with some tough trips last minute, but it did end up helping some teams schedule games they wouldn't have normally got (Maine hosting Siena, for example), and created some really good tv games. All in all, I think the positives outweighed the negatives. But I understand ending it- there are 1,000,000 channels now, everyone is going to get SOME tv exposure, and with all the conference shakeups, who knows what the situation will be going forward- are the mid-majors even "mid-majors" anymore or are they all in the Big East? |

IMO the beginning of the end was when Gonzaga opted out- you knew others were going to follow suit- but who is to blame Gonzaga- they hosted Illinois the other night on ESPN in front of 6,000 home fans, meanwhile UCLA and Texas are playing in front of 1,000 people in Houston.

Re: This is the last year of BracketBusters
It's quite simple.
If you're the fan of a school in a low mid, obscure conference (the AE) that doesn't get a lot of attention and have been successful over the 11 years of the Bracketbuster, the value is obvious. Or, if you're a school that has difficulty getting home games for whatever reason, the value is also obvious. If you're the fan of a school that for the most part has been on the low end or middling in a mid-major conference, then the event was a waste of a trip and worthless and you're not going to see any value.

Re: This is the last year of BracketBusters
I enjoyed the Boise State and VCU TV games and their return trips to SEFCU.
I would have liked them to continue it but only for the Top 2 or 3 teams from a conference invited. In the past whole conferences were invited. |
