Re: Dartmouth vs UVM 12/12/12

I'm kinda worried about Rusin, among other things. I think we really need him to play well- both he and Blue- to play well to get where we want to go.

That, and he's a junior and will be a key player next season as well.

Rusin is having the junior transfer struggles that seem to plague all UVM transfers.

Need to get better- we are not going to be 22pts better than Niagara like we were last year.

Need to keep getting better. On to the next one.

Re: Dartmouth vs UVM 12/12/12

Zero intensity at Patrick tonight. The size of the crowd was decent but the cheerleaders literally did not engage the crowd in one cheer while the teams were on the floor. I'm still debating who was more pathetic the cheerleaders or the basketball team. At least the band showed and played tonight.

As many of you already mentioned another weak performance as a team. Clancy Rugg and Trey Blue had good games but other than that there is nothing to hang our hats on tonight. The stat that is most alarming is that Dartmouth had 57 shot attempts to Vermont's 37. They took 20 MORE SHOTS! That is unbelievable to give up 16 offensive rebounds to Dartmouth.

I do credit Dartmouth they played a good game and are definitely more improved from the past but UVM missed a bunch of lay-ups, gave up way too many offensive rebounds, and were unable to execute consistently on offense. The other thing I noticed is we really don't have anyone that can finish consistently on a fast break. I miss the days of Marqus getting ahead of the defense and throwing it down over people. O'Day struggled mightily tonight and the five on the floor at the end of the game should be our new starting five. Sandro, Brian, Clancy, Trey, and Luke. That is by far are most consistent line-up to date.

I dont think a lot. Hector will play some pf as well. I think we will be able to play Voelkel less minutes than we have to right now. Kilpatrick is getting better and is eating into Voelkel minutes slightly. I think it will be a good thing to be able to sit Voelkel. Becker really needs to get through to him to shoot more.

Glass and MOJO. It happens to UVM junior tranfers. A year off messes with them a little.

Re: Dartmouth vs UVM 12/12/12

I don't remember seeing a screen or a pick & roll by UVM tonight. A lot of standing around on offense again. Until Blue got in nobody was taking the ball to the rim from outside. O'Day is too slow and predictable right now.

Dartmouth had a lot of second and third chances, and missed most of them. Otherwise the outcome would have been waaay different.

Rusin has to do some serious moving without the ball, and then catch and shoot. When he puts the ball on the floor bad things are happening.

Blue and Rugg on the floor at the same time made good things happen. We need more of that.

Re: Dartmouth vs UVM 12/12/12

I thought Cormier should have gone for the tie at the end of the game. Maldanas has some nice moves and was getting the call when he went aggressively to the hoop. Dump it in to Maldanas and let him go to work. That's what we did on the last possession and we got to the line and hit both free throws.

I've never been a fan of jacking a contested three when you have 29 seconds to work with.

Re: Dartmouth vs UVM 12/12/12

Rusin needs to be more consistent. Doesn't need to be a big scorer every game, but we need more out of him.

O'Day needs to get back to where he was at beginning of season too. Tonight was worst game I've seen him have. He missed some inside shots that are usually automatic. Kilpatrick missed a couple easy ones as well.

I'm not worried but this team isn't so talented where it can afford to have 2-3 key guys have total off nights and still win.

I remember seeing Sandro and Luke try it maybe twice in the second half but nothing was created from it.

Re: Dartmouth vs UVM 12/12/12

I was at Patrick Gym tonight. Crowd was as frustrated as The Folks At Home, so hard to get into the game. (Cheerleaders were not to blame!)

I've read through this thread and agree with a lot of the points already raised. My quick takeaways:

1. Freaking BOX OUT, guys! We cannot give up so many free offensive rebounds to the other team.
2. Bunnies. Make them. Really.
3. Turnovers. Take care of the damn ball. Rusin seems to have mental lapses early, but the pass at the tail end of the game from (I think) Apfeld was atrocious. A soft pass that led to a TO. We're in the stands looking at each other going, "uh oh... Towson...".
4. Trey Blue. I am really liking what he brings to the team when he's on the floor. And not just on the offensive side, but he had some good defensive work also. Seems to be settling in well.
5. Josh Elbaum. I wish he could score, just a bit every now and then, but.. he did a good job for quite long stretches as PG, especially in the first half, when Sandro and the rest of the starters were just bleah. Defensive effort, and some nice assists.
5. Clancy Rugg. I like it when he pushes his offense, 3s and some timely drives. I wonder how he feels being edged out of the starting lineup. I'm not sure he shouldn't be starting over O'Day. As much as I like Ethan, he is a frosh and needs some seasoning. A few extra pounds wouldn't hurt, either.
6. Brian Voelkel. It was on the far end of the court from where I was sitting tonight (Section 3), but I believe he came down with a rebound and one of the Dartmouth players tried to take it from him. Brian ripped the ball hard, and the Dartmouth kid's entire body came with it and got spun hard onto the floor. I do think he needs to be sparing with the ol' spin drive to the basket, because I think everyone knows about that now. He lost the ball on one of those attempts. He is making a lot more FTs than he used to, which is a big plus.

As has been observed more than once elsewhere, ugly win is way better than ugly loss. Or even close loss.

Yeah, that was Golden I believe who tried take the ball from Voelkel.

It reminded me of someone trying to take a food bowl away from a dog while it's still eating
