Re: Fairleigh Dickinson @ UVM 12/22

From what I could see when the video wasn't buffering before it totally quit near the end, UVM was playing more in transition. A couple nice alley-oops to Apfeld and O'Day were nice to see too.

Re: Fairleigh Dickinson @ UVM 12/22

Video feed sucked, but UVM did work down the stretch pulling out a 76-62 win. Apfeld with a new career high with 26, and Voelkel fell 2 assists shy of a triple double with 10,10,8.

Re: Fairleigh Dickinson @ UVM 12/22

UVM over FDU, 76-62. Voelkel 10 pts, 10 rebounds, 8 assists. Apfeld career high 26 pts. Rugg 13, Rusin 10, Blue 8. Cats shot 58% from the field, 42% from 3. Only 50% FT. 18/10 assist/TO. There is still a lot of room for improvement before they meet CofC, but a much better effort than the last time out, especially in the 2nd half.

Good job by UVM protecting their homecourt and picking up another AE win

Re: Fairleigh Dickinson @ UVM 12/22

Nice W yesterday for the Cats at Patrick. Good crowd as well. My observations:

*Fairleigh Dickinson was all Guards. Were severely lacking up front. That said, their guards are talented and if they had a big man they would be pretty good team.

*Bolding is a great scorer and I thought their freshman PG Sekou Harris was really good getting into defense.

*Elbaum didn't get into the game- didn't hear anyone say if he was injured?

* Kilpatrick made a weak entry pass that got picked off and then didn't return in the game. If that's how Becker has to be with this team then so be it. We're 11 games into the season and you just can't turn the ball over like that on weak play. Maybe that's why Elbaum didn't play?

* We basically went 7 deep yesterday, only 8 players played. I'm not sure we can go the 10 deep we typically do each year this season, or maybe Becker is getting ready to shorten the rotations.

* Only 10 turnovers. If we only turn the ball over 10 times, we have a good chance of beating every team on our schedule .

*Great team win- thought everyone who was involved played well.

I was really impressed with their pg. He got into the lane at will and made the right pass almost everytime. It almost seemed like he would shoot and then randomly make the right pass. Sandro is not the best defensive pg. He struggles with the quick guys.

The other team did have a big man. Number 44 was a real good ball player. He did benefit from some open looks but he also had some nice baskets down low. I'm not sure if UVM knows he's left handed yet. I thought UVM did a nice job limiting their big the second half. outside of that 1 guy they had no one down low.

Re: Fairleigh Dickinson @ UVM 12/22

A couple observations: Very short rotation as has been mentioned. No Josh Elbaum, no Ben Crenca, only about 3 minutes for Brendan Kilpatrick. I didn't expect to see much of Ben given the composition of FDU. I wonder if the short rotation was by design, going in to the game.

The pace of the game was much more enjoyable to watch. More dunks in this game than all previous games this year COMBINED! That translates to crowd noise, excitement in the stands and tickets sold. I don't mind a good defensive game, but the last couple were flat out not fun to watch. I don't imagine the casual fan would continue to buy tickets for games like that.

There were a couple new wrinkles in the offensive sets that were really nice to see and resulted in dunks. I think our sets are sometimes too predictable. I'm pretty sure Albany knows our stuff as well as our guys do. They always scout us really well. For league play, I'd really like to see the staff continue to add in some new wrinkles here and there to keep the defense honest.

Good to see the Cipliecki brain trust come up with a good scouting report and game plan for this one.

Elbaum didn't look hurt to me during warm-ups. The pace of this game was much better. We need to keep in mind that FDU gives up 81 points a game on average. Our guys got lots of uncontested lay-ups. Not trying to take anything away from the team as I thought they played very well yesterday however I don't expect to see this kind of efficiency going forward. We faced a team that doesn't defend particularly well.

Yep, FDU was not a particularly good defensive team and were severely short-handed in the front court- which led to a lot of easy baskets in the paint. That being said, we did exactly what we needed to do and executed against them, so credit to UVM coaches and players.

Elbaum didn't look hurt to me in warm ups either- perhaps he's going to be back to really earning minutes.

Agree- I don't believe the casual fans would continue to buy tickets given performances like Towson and Dartmouth. I'm hoping that we play like this a bit more and it wasn't just because of our opponent.

From the conversations I heard from some of the people at the game, they didn't sound too thrilled with the product they have been seeing as well. More than a couple thought we didn't really have guys that could score and heard a couple say how much this team missed Four.

I believe we have guys that can score- I think Luke, Clancy, Rusin, Blue, Sandro and O'Day are all capable of putting up big numbers on any given night. Maybe a shortened bench will help some guys get more touches, I'm not sure. As I pointed out in the Niagara loss, Rugg and Blue combined for 7 FG attempts total. I have no idea how we would expect to beat anyone if those two guys only take 3 and 4 shots.

Would really like to see this team get some consistency with a strong performance against CofC.

But I still maintain, if we keep our turnovers to around 10 a game and not 17-20 a game and do the other things we typically do- defend, rebound, make FTs, I like our chances against most anyone.

Not really much of a surprise that Harris was able to drive at will all game- Elbaum never got into the game. Sandro is a solid defender but as you mentioned he really struggles against quicker guards.

It's really too bad Josh has been struggling with turnovers and his overall offense lately- because he is still IMO our best perimeter defender.

Re: Fairleigh Dickinson @ UVM 12/22

Reading between the lines of Becker's interview, Elbaum may be sitting because of his negative effect on the offense. He persists in doing that spin move which really is a pass to the opposing team, while his passing to his teamates has not been crisp or thoughtful. He'll play again, but Becker really wanted to make sure of beating FDU and sat him.

Re: Fairleigh Dickinson @ UVM 12/22

IMO, The entire team needs to work on lateral passes on the wing and entry passes to the post. Specifically ball fakes.

Only players I see that actually do effective ball fakes are Voelkel and Blue.

+1 I have said it before, they almost run the flex to a fault!!! It is like its practice and they are just going through the motions with the basic set, after the defense has been instructed "do not try and steal it because you know where the pass is going" very lazy passes..... and the bigs, especially O'day (who i really like) are not waiting long enough before they move to the high post. I am sure the staff sees this and they will get it turned around... against FD we had a mis-match at every position, it would have been nice to see them come out of their set and exploit this more down low, especially with Voekel, he had 3 to 4 inches and 40lbs on the guy guarding him and he never posted up, always a drive!
