Re: Retiring the number of an all time great
I have two comments to make. First, the tired old Voelkel versus Brenton pissing match has started again. We all know where everyone stands. It seems both players are clearly the key contributors for each team and during their careers have carved honored spots in their respective program's history. That should be enough. Secondly, no reasonable SBU fan would disagree UVM has been the conference heavyweight this last decade. SBU has made strides the last few years and as a Seawolf fan I hope we can have a level of dominence during the next decade and beyond. For a little historical perspective, Stony Brook was an Eastern power in the mid to late 70's. The program reached the Division III Final 4 in 1978. Of course, this means nothing in the D1 world, but still it is something the University community can be proud of.

Re: Retiring the number of an all time great
I think Brenton certainly deserves some sort of recognition for his career. SBU coaching has built the team into a program expected to be successful after he's gone, but the way he plays has probably been a major attraction for the talent that the team has now. He's a charismatic team player who showers his teammates with dimes.

Re: Retiring the number of an all time great
If he gets SBU to the big dance this year then yes...to me the retiring of a jersey is the highest of honors and should be done only for the extraordinary players...that have achieved greatness relative to our level...
UA has retired the number of one player...Jamar Wilson...that is the type of accomplished career that deserves a retired jersey. Sadly for SBU fans Tommy is no Jamar although he is a very well rounded/tough nosed player.

Re: Retiring the number of an all time great
Guys I hate to tell you this but if you have to start a petition to persuade the school/Administration to retire his jersey he probably doesn't deserve the accolade.
His Jersey will be retired because it is deserved and everyone realizes it - it's a no brainer whose jersey should be retired. If you have push people it probably isn't deserved. Usually numbers or jerseys are retired a few years or more after a player graduates and leaves - no coertion needed. Just my thoughts. |

Jamar was better but to say that "sadly Tommy is no jamar" is a little much. If SBU wins he should have it retired. Looking at our most recent recruitign class Tommy has had a bigger effect on our program as a whole. |

Re: Retiring the number of an all time great
Shhh, Patch c'mon I want to see how long this thing can go.
Creating an online petition to have a player's jersey retired....while he's still playing. And it's serious. You can't make this stuff up. This has been comedic gold. I see Salty's posts are becoming truly inspirational to some of the other SBU fans.
