Re: Vermont vs Maine 1/22/13
In addition to the porous defense and missing a ton of threes down the stretch Rusin missed a reverse lay-up when we had the lead at 50-41. It was a 3 on 1 break and for some inexplicable reason he decided to reverse the lay-up instead of taking the ball to the strong side of the hoop. I know the game doesn't come down to one play but I thought that fast break might break Maine's spirit after a really impressive first half. We go up by double digits and that may have been all she wrote. Instead the lay-up rolls off the iron and Maine breaths a sigh of relief and goes on their big run.

Re: Vermont vs Maine 1/22/13
I just get back to Voelkel. When Voelkel is not on the court against the tougher opponents, we tend to sputter big-time. I think with this current group of players, his presence alone is the difference between a 12-13 win team and potential 20 win championship team.
Brian Voelkel knows how to get the ball inside and create easy baskets. Brian Voelkel knows how to find shooters. Brian Voelkel can drive the ball himself. Brian Voelkel steals the ball. Brian Voelkel gets the offensive and defensive rebounds. He's such a huge part of our team, all over the court, on both sides of the ball. Just watch our offense and the shots we get when he's not on the floor- typically not the best shots. Look at the SBU game, we were blowing them out with Voelkel on the court but then he fouls out and SBU gets back in the game. Against Maine we take him out and a 7/9 pt lead completely vanishes in literally a matter of minutes. And when he's been off which is rare, we completely lose like against BU. Hopefully, this is something the team recognizes and works on. He needs to be able to rest and his teammates need to pick him up.

Stupid Catamounts...Just when I get excited for a great season they lose focus. Same thing happened last year and then they ran off like 10 straight wins so we'll see but I think we end up in the 3-4 range for playoff seeding.
