In terms of football, I'm not sure how much worse you could actually get. That is horrible. As far as men's hoops, couple of teams with some strong tradition and some with potential. God, that just looks like a thrown together hodgepodge of schools...

Yeah and because they can't really rescind invitations, they have SMU, Houston and Tulane in there too. I think Tulsa and UMASS get the first invites and then if/when UCONN and Cincy leave, then Charlotte and ODU step in

East
Temple
UMASS
ECU
Charlotte
ODU
South Florida

West
SMU
Houston
Memphis
Tulane
Tulsa
Central Florida

Kinda does look like the East Coast version of the Mountain West.

Is it even certain that UMass is going to stay FBS? I was under the assumption that some people weren't happy the the income situation.

Gross conference. If there is a market comprised of human beings that would pay actual money to see these schools compete in sports, I would like to meet all 5 of them and shake their hands.

That conference makes a hell of a lot more sense than what the Big East was going to become........

Re: Can we please add Bryant now???

FYI - The NEC Presidents just denied Monmouth's application to for associate membership in football and bowling, but allowing them to remain in field hockey.

http://blogs.app.com/hawks/2013/01/2...te-membership/

I think this is bad news if the AE was/is expecting to grab Bryant and/or CCSU in the near future, without a plan to address football.
Quote:
“When Monmouth University decided to accept an invitation to join the MAAC, they did so with full knowledge that the MAAC did not sponsor the sports of football, field hockey and bowling. Monmouth subsequently submitted an application to be an associate member in the NEC in each of those three sports. The NEC Council of Presidents evaluated the associate membership requests separately, and in doing so made their decisions relative to the long term stability and interests of the Conference. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Monmouth in the sport of field hockey, and wish Monmouth success in the sports of football and bowling as they seek new partnerships in those sports.”

LMAO at the bowling powers-that-be in the NEC. Stand strong!

This may actually open the door for the league to look at football sponsorship. If you take the 4 current members who play football (Maine, UNH, Albany & Stony Brook), keep URI from the CAA, add Bryant to the league & bring Monmouth in as an associate, you have 7 football members right there. If CCSU is invited, suddenly you have 8. Not the strongest league but certainly one that has some teams with NCAA appearances & wins.

Something tells me UNH and Stony Brook won't like it. But if the goal is to contain costs, retain some regional rivalries, this would be a nice league. I just can't see the New England schools continuing to play in a league with Virginia schools for slightly better FCS football. It is just a matter of when it happens, but I think it will

Re: Can we please add Bryant now???

I would rather see SBU, UNH, Maine and Albany stay in the CAA for football. We are still playing each other and get to play Delaware, Towson, Nova, JMU instead of Monmouth, Bryant, CCSU etc.

I agree with all that...I'm sure there would be some heel dragging over that, but yes, in the long run, this would make sense.

Is it really that bad? There's quite a bit of sensibility to it. These are mostly large (20k plus) public schools (SMU, Tulane, Tulsa are exceptions) that sponsor FBS football. Some have decent basketball. With the two divisions, there's decent geography too.
