Re: What AE city would you want to live in.

I realize I'm not adding much at this point, but...

Boston
Albany
Baltimore
Hartford
Durham
Burlington
Orono
Binghamton
Stony Brook

Thought I'd throw some love Albany's way, a city I do enjoy whenever I'm there. The rest of my list is tilted toward the bigger cities (except Bing of course). Not a Long Island fan

Re: What AE city would you want to live in.

A lot of folks have talked about neighboring areas. One very cool thing about Burlington is you could be in Montreal in what 90 minutes? Great option for the occasional weekend or day trip

Yeah, It's too bad it's not located in Portland, would probably be much more attractive to kids applying. I've never actually been to Portland but from everything I've heard/seen about it seems like a great place.

If UVM was located somewhere other than Burlington and in a random part of Vermont, not sure what impact that would have but I don't know if I would have been in any rush to apply there.

I was at UConn this year and....well, let's just say it's too bad for UConn it's located where it is. Does not look like a fun place to be for 4 years, or any years. At least they have good athletics.

Yep- very short trip up there. Montreal is one of my favorite cities by far.

Re: What AE city would you want to live in.

I spent a weekend in Montreal this summer. I hadn't been there for 10 years. I was impressed with the number of construction projects completed and on-going from the last time I visited. Montreal appears to be thriving.

I like Montreal as well.
I am a big baseball fan and grew up a mets fan, but I preferred going to Montreal for a weekend series than going to NY. Better city, better beers, way better seats for less money, about the same time getting there (from Albany) and less traffic than NY. Unfortunately the way better seats for less money meant that eventually they moved to where they thought there would be more fans. I noew see the Nationals whenever Albany@UMBC games allow for it.
For me it would be hard to rank 2-7, I would prefer Albany and I would never want to move back to LI . All the others I would see Albany on the visit, and could find enough baseball games in the area or surrounding areas to keep busy in the summer. All have plusses and minuses. Even Boston which is bigger and more costly than I would like, is close to the cape cod league and if I lived there I would actually make a bean pot.

Been to a ton of Montreal Expos games. Tim Raines, Tim Wallach, Delino DeShields, Moises Alou, Marquis Grissom, Larry Walker, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Bartolo Colon, and my all-time favorite Expo Vladimir Guerrero.

Re: What AE city would you want to live in.

I've been to all the cities... and all have their place... to me location and convenience weigh heavily.

Boston, MA -- major city, I like the hub!

Binghamton, NY -- a small city with a giant stamp on corporate america, plus so convenient to so many cities.

Burlington, VT -- beautiful town, but middle of nowhere.

Baltimore, MD -- bigger city, lots of crime, great inner harbor!

Hartford, CT -- mid-sized city, not a lot of charm or character -- meadows music place was fun for music fest once.

Albany, NY -- I like the capital area, some good places to eat, state gov't is what makes everything turn.

Brookhaven, NY -- Stony Brook isn't really a town at all, just a neighborhood or hamlet, and just part of LI's rolling suburbs!

Durham, NH -- Tiny town, not as far out of the way as Orono, but it is no Manchester or Boston of the region.

Orono, ME -- went for a game and left for Portland (great little city), but Maine is so far out of the way.

I was also in Montreal last summer. What amazed me is that I did not see one store/restaurant,etc unoccupied/out of business. In CT/NY it seems there are so many unoccupied establishments available for rent. It was a good vibe that their economy was in much better shape than ours.

I did the same thing as you. I grew up in Albany, and preferred going to games at the Big O instead of paying big money to go to NY or BOS. Loved all the same Expos as UVMHC. Thankfully I moved to DC the same year that they did!

Bah. I go to those games in DC too, but they're not the same. They barely recognize the Expos history, so I return the favor and think of them like I would an expansion team.

Re: What AE city would you want to live in.

I don't think I'd like living in cities too much. Probably the only one I;d liked would be New York, with Boston probably being #2. With that said:

1) Burlington (University of Vermont). A city, but not really a city. I know its confusing. Largest in Vermont, but only got like 55 or 60 thousand people as the total population which would put Burlington at #5 in Fairfield County's most populated cities, and who the hell knows where on CT's overall population list (definitely not above Hartford or New Haven, maybe not even above Windham, Glastonbury, Hamden, New Britian, Bristol or New London either.)
2) Boston (BU)
3) Stony Brook (SBU)
4) Catonsville (Towson). Uncle lives in Baltimore, at least I'd have family nearby.
5) Hartford (Hartford)
6) Durham (UNH)
7) Binghamton (Binghamton)
8) Orono (Maine)
9) Albany (Albany)

There is no way Binghamton is second, in your heart maybe.

In regards to Hartford though, a relative of mine went there recently (Ive never been there) during the weekend and said it was dead and nothing going on. it feels like a city that is hopping during the work week but has a less then stellar night weekend night life.

How do you know?? Its not like Binghamton is one of those towns off of route 17 in the Catskills with a gas station 10 feet of the highway and then 40 miles of nothing.
