What AE city would you want to live in.
I am interested if you where a coach and given the opportunity to coach at any of the AE schools solely based on the city assuming your salary, administration, fan base etc... where the same at each school which city would you choice first to last. Here is my list:
1.) Boston 2.) Albany (if I had to live in upstate NY this is the city I would pick.) 3.) UMBC 4.)Vermont (looked it up on wikipeida I like that its on the lake, must be nice during the summer months). 5.) SBU (I like that it is right off of nyc, but all the people from long island I meet at binghamton U, and there was alot of them where all pretty snoby. 6.)Hartford 7.)Binghamton 8.)UNH 9.)Maine |

Re: What AE city would you want to live in.
Based on the cities I feel comfortably differentiating between:
1) Boston 2) Burlington 3) Durham 4) Albany 5) Catonsville I've never been to Binghamton, Orono or Stony Brook, and haven't spent enough time in Hartford to offer a meaningful opinion. Burlington is a really hip, very walkable downtown. Durham is a cute college town, very near the ocean & Portsmouth and with easy transport to Boston & Portland. I've been to Albany professionally, and found it to be pretty dreary downtown... that monolithic government building and connected arena are otherworldly... ominous from the outside and oddly lighted and seemingly endless on the inside. UMBC is a city built inside a traffic circle at the end of an offramp... at least it's convenient to the airport. |

Re: What AE city would you want to live in.
1. Boston
2. Baltimore No where else. Don't get me wrong, I love visiting Burlington, vt - lovely little city, people are amazingly friendly, great vibe. i like portsmouth, nh, as well, but I can't live more than 15 minutes from a major city - I'm city born and city bread... And I really need a lot more ethnic and racial diversity to feel at home. Albany has some of these qualities, but I can't deal with upstate New York winters and the city has just never "done it" for me.... Hartford becomes a ghost town once businesses get out... And Long Island is Long Island - enough said... |

Re: What AE city would you want to live in.
As a UVM fan I would want to coach UVM and would be very happy with it. Not being a UVM fan I would only base it on what school would get me to a higher conference. UMBC has a great backyard to recruit from. Burlington has a lot of draw to college kids. SB has a lot of talent around them to recruit from. Boston is a major city but BU is the fourth college in town. It's very hard to choose. Bing is close to PA. UA has upstate NY. I know the last school I would choose is Maine. Cold winters and having to draw recruits really far away from home.
IF I was choosing just on the city I would prefer to live in. Durham Burlington Hartford the rest Maine |

But getting back to the original question......... If we are choosing the actual towns/cities that these schools are located in............ 1. Orono (because I love the State of Maine.......not so much because I love the Orono/Bangor area) 2. Durham 3. Boston 4. Stony Brook 5. Hartford 6. Burlington 7. Albany 8. Baltimore 9. Binghamton My rankings are based on the following...........if I am going to be isolated, I want it to be in Maine and I love living near the ocean (sorry Bing and Albany)...........Baltimore is not my cup of tea, but I'd love to visit someday. Burlington........great city but too far from coastal New England and is more influenced by New Yorkers. Hartford........best of the rest (mostly location). Stony Brook would be interesting........Boston (duh!). Durham.........NH Seacoast and close to Maine. |

Re: What AE city would you want to live in.
Just some stats via the weather channel:
Average winter temps: Dec - 26 (both Orono & Burlington) Jan - 20 (Orono); 18 (Burlington) Feb - 24 (Orono); 22 (Burlington) March - 33 (Orono); 31 (Burlington) Just in case...

Re: What AE city would you want to live in.
There is a reason I chose Durham over Burlington. It's too cold in Burlington. That being said I love the city of Burlington and have friends and family in the area so I still ranked them second. Durham isn't the warmest place in the AE but I dont like big cities and I dont like snow.
I disagree Burlington is influenced by NY. You go across the lake it's nothing like Burlington. |

Re: What AE city would you want to live in.
Mine would be:
1. Durham 2. Orono 3. Burlington 4. Boston 5. Stony Brook 6. Hartford 7. Albany 8. Binghamton 9. Baltimore I enjoy small towns and definitely more coastal. Baltimore is last, despite the inner harbor & everything that it has to offer for the simple fact that a very good friend of mine & college classmate was murdered near Camden Yards. He was a HUGE Orioles fan while growing up and a couple years after graduation, he landed his dream job working with the organization. A few months later, he was leaving a club with a couple friends, they got mugged and he was shot. I have a hard time with anything Baltimore now...

Re: What AE city would you want to live in.
1. Boston
2. Burlington- If there were an abundance of jobs in my industry I'd move there tomorrow, but since my industry in fact doesn't exist in Vermont, don't think I'm moving back up there anytime soon. LOVE Burlington though. My ideal situation if I were to move back to VT would be to have a primary home in Burlington and then build a home on the lake somewhere in the Champlain Islands so have a place to spend the summer and be close to Montreal as well. 3. Hartford- Not the most exciting place, but I could live in West Hartford. Nice place to live with a family IMO and nice homes are very affordable relative to NYC/Boston similar communities. 4. Long Island- Not my first choice, but I could live there given proximity to NYC.

Re: What AE city would you want to live in.
1. Boston -- I live there now.
2. Burlington -- Beautiful. 3. Durham -- Small, but went to school there. Not really sure you can give credit to Portsmouth. 4. Albany -- I kind of like it. Not too far from anything. 5. Binghamton -- Spent some time there recently, liked parts of it. 6. Long Island -- Meh. 7. Orono -- That cursed paper mill clouds my perception. God it's far up, too. 8. Baltimore -- Because I don't like Hartford. 9. Hartford -- Egh. No problem with the campus, but don't like leaving it.

Re: What AE city would you want to live in.
Burlington. Where I'm at. Sure it's cold as f^%$k, but it's beautiful. And winter makes you really appreciate summer.
Second I'd pick Baltimore. If I were going to live somewhere else, I'd pick a city with at least ONE pro sport. I do realize the crime rate is MUCH higher than Burlington's. Sorry about your friend, umainealum. |

Re: What AE city would you want to live in.
Burlington (because I live here and love it!!!!)
Boston (Great sports town!!!!!) Albany (Doesn't feel like upstate NY and close to Saratoga and Lake George) Hartford (less than 2 hours to both Boston and NYC) Baltimore (Very cool place) Durham (Seacoast is somewhat appealing) Stony Brook (Near Big Apple but feel trapped on LI) Orono (No way - too cold, too snowy, too lonely, too many bears) Binghamton (would live there only if I was sent to prison) |

Re: What AE city would you want to live in.
If for some reason I couldn't live in Burlington, none of the other AE locations would be my first choice. I'd prefer that Burlington was smaller, so any place bigger is off my list. I'd prefer that Burlington was warmer, so Orono and Durham don't make the cut.
Since I can't think of any reason that would exile me, I'm just going to stay here. |
