Re: UMass Lowell to America East

Just joined this board today, as I heard the rumors about Lowell moving to D1 in all sports. From this UML alum ... very glad to see it.

Interesting to see people denigrating the education at Lowell, which has gotten much better over the past few years. The standards have increased, the % accepted has dropped (and is lower than UVM's), etc. Whatever you may think of Meehan, there is no question that the school has gotten better under his command. UML is expanding finally, a few new buildings have gone up, and the money has actually been coming in finally. It's fun to see generalizations like those posted here about who goes to Lowell. I got accepted into many good schools (BC and Bryant included in this area) but chose to go Lowell because I didn't want my parents to have to help me pay for school, and I could also work at the same time.

In regards to the rumor ... I'd be happy if this happened. I have no idea if the number of sports Lowell currently participates in would need to go up? I do know (and expect) that the budget would have to go up, and do so a lot. For example, while Lowell generally has been a middle-of-the-road program in Hockey East, they have the smallest recruiting budget of all the programs in the conference. So the program has done well with what it could. Of course, having the Tsongas helps quite a bit as well.

UMLFan-

Honestly, great post! Again, I am jaded from my former dealings with the prior incarnation of UM-L. Wishing you guys success, and I do hope the brand and academics are on the upswing like you state.

Athletically, there is NO doubt UM-L will be just fine...sooner rather than later. No doubt about it. And I think the baseball tourney and hoops tourney in Lowell would be spectacular. That baseball stadium is tremendous.

What's more impressive is that we actually got two UM-L fans...I don't know about you guys but I'm impressed... that's already a bigger following on this board then Hartford and downtrodden Binghamton.

Just checked out their Edward A. LeLacheur Baseball Park online. Spectacular! Seawolves would love playing there.

Just my 2 cents - which is meaningless and will be a waste of your day to read. Really - you will never get this 9 seconds back.

Why the big deal about the Tsonga's Center? Seats 6500 for basketball but who cares - its not like the AE is selling out any of its venues for the tournament.

I did some research and see the the site is named after Paul Tsongas. This is problematic for me because my only knowledge of him is Al Frankin playing him on Saturday Night Live. He appeared at a Star Trek Convention - pretty funny.

LeLacheur is great. I've seen a couple games there, great minor league spot. And super easy to get to. I wish Burlington had a stadium like this for the Lake Monsters (I know, I know...one badly-needed pipe-dream of a facility at a time).

Re: UMass Lowell to America East

Hopping on board today as well with the news. I won't comment on the academic rankings. Lowell gave me an excellent education that led to a career I like without putting me into debt. As a large public research university, I think it'll fit in nicely with the rest of the AE schools.

Lowell is definitely a hockey school first. The improvements to the Tsongas Center and focus on marketing over the last few years has been extraordinary. Attendance-wise, Lowell is 3rd in Hockey East behind only Boston College and UNH with an average of 5,114. I guess as long as the move up to D-1 doesn't cut into Lowell's budget for hockey, I'm happy with the move. I just don't want what's happening at Northeastern to happen at Lowell where the AD directs all his efforts at b-ball.

For baseball, you simply cannot beat LeLacheur Park. The Spinners do an amazing job of keeping the stadium up and I could definitely see it regularly hosting the AE Championship.

I'm honestly not sure if Lowell would continue to play hoops in Costello Athletic Center or move all of its games to Tsongas. Costello is pretty small, fits about 2,000 or so. I can see them playing most of their games there and having a few of the marquee matchups against schools like UNH and UVM at Tsongas.

All in all, I think this is a great move for the university and hope all the rumors are true. We'll find out tomorrow I guess!

Re: UMass Lowell to America East

As soon as the NEC refused to let Monmouth be an affiliate member for football, the writing was on the wall as far as Bryant and CCSU went. Neither were going to make their football teams homeless for a slightly upwards move.

I greatly prefer UML to NJIT. I don't know what other non-football schools were out there.

Easy for me to drive to, can sleep at home, I don't have to stay two nights in some random Best Western.

I like them already...no way are they more arrogant or bigger corn-holes then SBU fans.
