Implications of the loss of Albany

Conference changes have become destabilizing to many conference, but this could really hurt the AE in a huge way. The consensus is if Albany does join the CAA, they will announce after the baseball tourney, but the move will be effective for next year (2013-14) so they don't have a "lame duck" year, correct?

If so, and a replacement isn't announced by July 1 to begin play next year, then America East basketball will have just 8 teams and a 14-game league schedule, and just 7 teams will be eligible for the conference tourney.

Also, the AE would have 7 sports "at risk" ...
- 6 men's soccer teams (maintains AQ status)
- 6 volleyball teams (includes Providence as an associate member)
- 6 baseball teams (although only 5 would be eligible for the NCAAs)
- 5 men's lacrosse teams (could keep AQ with a waiver)
- 5 women's lacrosse teams (could keep AQ with waiver)
- 5 softball teams (could keep AQ with waiver)
- 4 field hockey teams (lost AQ, plus UML is not NCAA eligible)

Re: Implications of the loss of Albany

Insiders have previously said expect to see NJIT announcement of joining AE relatively soon, so I expect that will happen next.

If so, then America East isn't doing much ...

Bryant and Sacred Heart sponsor all 7 of the AE sports at risk.

CCSU sponsors 5 of the 7 (doesn't have MLax or FH)

NJIT sponsors only 3 (men's soccer, volleyball, and baseball) of the 7.

My guess is if/when NJIT moves to the AE the commit additional dollars as well as additional programs to help the AE.

I'd love to add Bryant but reportedly they said no. Wouldn't be against CCSU anymore at this point either.

But NJIT does sponsor the one sport the AE is nationally known for: Desperation. AQ: retained.
