That's just crazy. The state...is poor.

UVM will get this project done, but talk about lucky, and those spearheading it have the toughest job in the state.

It's going to take a combination of private/public financing to build the Keurig Green Mountain Coffee Arena
Vermont is not "Mississippi" poor though.......you would think that there are enough wealthy people/companies in Vermont with some Catamount pride to make a few sizable donations. Ben & Jerry's or Keurig Green Mountain Arena anyone?

On a side note......can't believe that Green Mountain changed their corporate name and added "Keurig". Blah.......just "Green Mountain Arena" would have been a bitchin name for a UVM facility.

It's not Mississippi poor but it's also not wealthy either. There really are no high-paying jobs and not many companies.

There are plenty of wealth people living there either full or part-time but mostly they are retirees from somewhere else without much affinity towards the community or UVM. Ben & Jerry's is owned by a conglomerate now. IDX could have been a possibility but that's part of GE Healthcare now. Companies like Burton and Seventh Generation don't really care about basketball, unless we could somehow convince them basketball is a "green initiative".

Keurig brand is largely what the company is known for so the name change makes quite a bit of sense IMO. That's one company that's doing well in Vermont so If they kicked some money our way they can call it the Keurig Center for all I care.

Well this isn't news, haha. We've known about this since last July. Thanks for the congrats, though.

Edit: This is the first image of the facility I've seen. Hopefully it has a similar feel to the RAC inside.

Dealer.com was recently purchased for something like $1 billion...as far as not having high paying jobs in the state, one need only look down the list of administrators/managers and department heads at the University of Vermont. ;-)

Dealer.com has done a very good job and definitely a successful Vermont company.

LoL...no doubt UVM is by far the best employer in Burlington.

That equates to 272 million dollars in just 15 years.
Bonds mostly, but Towson and UMBC built multi-purpose facilities that aren't just arenas. That helps justify the cost, I guess.

We had mentioned this a while ago but it got lost in the dumpster fire that we've been enduring since 2008.

Re: $85 Million Dollar Arena to Open at UMBC in 2017-18

Vermont is 19th in per capita income... Florida is 37 and if you want to talk about retirees then no place in the US rivals Florida. I think Vermont could make a concerted effort to lower tuition if it was desired by the populace. I imagine many Vermonters are fine with sending their kid out of state though.

On topic: Congrats to UMBC. UMBC seems to have one of the best geographic location to attract recruits in the AE and this will help as well.

I had hoped it would be completed sooner but it looks like it's a much larger project than just building an Events Center.

I like how the article mentioned past milestone games including a DII tournament game in 1979, but not the 2008 AE Championship, which happens to be the highest attended basketball game in the building's history. That being said, did I see that they're planning on taking out Administration Dr. and the only stoplight on campus and putting in more traffic circles?

Looks like that is the plan. Traffic circles apparently to help egress after class.

Its scary to think that an NCAA DIII tourney matchup may be more of a highlight than our League championship. Ouch. lol

Here's the map of UMBC and where the Events Center is likely going to go based upon what I know (site is marked with red 'X').

If you look at it it appears that the two level garage is still there and it appears that Administration Drive is still there ... but it's not colored like a road so I have no idea what they're planning. Maybe something with the garage to put ingress/egress on the far side so the road dead ends at the beginning of the garage (in the direction of travel).

I hope they're planning a new parking lot, because Stadium Lot has freshmen residents in the middle of the week; unless they finally opened that freshman lot off campus.

By all means take your shots in the categories you can.
