The reality is that this wasn't completely driven by athletics at UMBC. They have to pay to rent facilities to graduate their students. Plus, back in the day, bands like the Foo Fighters have played on campus at UMBC. This could very well bring bands back to UMBC during the summer. Especially given the arena in Baltimore is a dumpster fire.

Anyway, my point is that Vermont's smart in not chasing an arena (and the debt) just for basketball or athletics in general. I haven't been to UVM before but it may make more sense for Vermont to consider a multi-purpose facility like Binghamton (and now UMBC) rather than an athletics-only facility.

Especially given how crappy tuition rates have become and how crappy the job market is for a lot of graduating seniors. At least the cost of construction of a multi-purpose facility can be rationalized as necessary.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you, nothing being built these days in the "5000-10000 seat arena" category is ever strictly a "athletics-only facility." And maybe that aspect isn't being pitched enough by the people trying to raise the money to those who may give the money. You put something like Agganis Arena (to use one example) in the middle of UVM's campus, you immediately create the only viable indoor concert venue in the state of Vermont. And it's in Burlington, 90 minutes south of Montreal and 3 hours north of Boston. Translation: your mid-week concert stop between weekend shows. You open the door for events like WWE, "_____" on Ice, and other "sports entertainment" style ventures to make Burlington a stop. You may be able to lure away various trade shows that currently use the Champlain Valley Exposition as their home (RV shows, home & garden shows, probably anything that doesn't involve live animals). The only limit is the one you put on yourself for who you'd pursue as a customer. This could fill a pretty significant void in the venue department.

Congratulations UMBC fans! That will be a great facility for your team and the community. Only if UNH would play a game or two in the Whit every year oh well that is for another time!

Groundbreaking will begin in January (for some reason).

Seating for basketball games will remain close to the amount of just over 4,000 that the current facility offers, Rexing said.
This is news to me. Not that we need more than 4,000 but that they have really segmented the space in such a way that they can maximize utility and not just park thousands of potentially empty seats.

Can we talk about something less depressing?

Actually, from the article...
Quote:
The project is expected to break ground in February, a UMBC official said Wednesday. It will take 21 months to complete and open in winter 2017.
...my math may be slightly off.

Anyway, it does have a rendering of what it'll look like on the inside, and, well...I'm only 75% impressed.

Seems like the horseshoe seating is the in thing for arenas that size. Bangor's arena did the same. It lets you sell 100% of your seats for concerts without someone staring that the back of the stage.

I'm fine with it. They can always bring in bleachers for additional seating to make a lower bowl if they need to. But more importantly, I think it's so that they could make one big space like the Vestal Center in Binghamton.

I'm looking forward to the first game there next winter.

What's with the awkward space between the seats and the court?

Congratulations! This is pretty exciting news for UMBC fans.

So is the scoreboard on the far wall instead of above the court? I guess that would make it easier and less expensive to make it a video board as well.

It's a new building, I'm sure amenities will be great but...I have to ask. Will they be parking planes in there when there are no games? I demand to see the other end of the arena to check for giant sliding doors.

Outside, I really like the look.

Re: $85 Million Dollar Arena to Open at UMBC in 2017-18

I'm kinda hoping to use it to finally lure a minor league hockey team to Baltimore, even if it's just a temporary home for the Blast soccer team if they decide to renovate the train wreck downtown.

By the way, am I the only one who thinks this actually looks like the one downtown?

And by the way...I understand we may have some disagreements about the inside looks but...85 mil? The quality and amenities should be off the chain. Congrats...I know I'm jelly, I'd love for Albany to get 20mil to do something with SEFCU.

My guess is that the space between the court and the seats is because the Events Center is designed to hold several thousand students in that area around the floor for graduation. But, like ball_of_rubber, I hope that we can use it to lure events or sports away from that disaster in Baltimore.

I could see 7-8k at the Events Center, including SRO or seats on the floor for concerts again which would be great for the school and the community.

Re: $85 Million Dollar Arena to Open at UMBC in 2017-18

Didn't one of the previously quoted articles in this thread mention 4,000 seats for basketball? I guess the upper deck won't be used at all.

It also said $67 mil, so I guess inflation is killing us all.
