Maybe the horseshoe is 4,000 and then can add another 1,000 from the empty space next to the hangar door if needed?

Not that we'll need 400 at this rate

I'm looking forward to the first game there next winter.
That's where Maine puts the band.

I will probably buy season tickets even though I will only make a few games when I move to DC.

This is why I don't like state funded, multi-purpose facilities. I get it, UMBC cannot bankroll a dedicated basketball "arena" as some of the other universities in the area have done. That being said...the interior picture is still a major, major disappointment with the open end and people entering the stands between the court and the seats. Looks like Towson's old arena.

It looks like they have ruined the good bowl atmosphere they have now.

Idiots! Time to move south.

Honestly, I would be more happy if my team was playing better. I would like to go into this arena stronger with a proven head coach. Hopefully the talent in the area and a new arena can lure a solid coach. I am usually the optimistic one but I have lost my patience with Aki Thomas and this Rookie staff. If UMBC wants to really make money off of this arena and sell tickets, basketball is the only sport we got to make money. Need to invest more into it. We are school based on STEM which is why I went and got my degree but it would be nice to expand our focus. We are a great academic and research school, much like the America East. How far this team has landed off course from that first Wake Forest game.

What's the combined records of teams and new facilities recently in this conference? Makes me sick/really happy for you all.

UVM is clearly taking this arena initiative all wrong.

They can add a bowl with temporary bleachers if needed. But I think the larger point is that this is not being built just for basketball. For that reason, having a bowl isn't practical. I'm fine with this arrangement. If in the future there's a need for more seating, they can always build a bowl. But by not building one to start it gives them the flexibility for the space they need.

I misread this. I thought they were going to have it done in 11 months, which would have been ambitious. 21 months seems a lot more realistic.

A little article about the new arena, with a few tidbits.

Quote:
UMBC has been recognized as one of the most "innovative" schools in the nation (ranked fourth, actually, behind Arizona State, Stanford and MIT) by U.S. News & World Report. The Catonsville, Md., school, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in September, was featured in the Princeton Review's "2015 Best Colleges" guide.
I have a family member on the west coast who spent her entire career in academics, and never heard of UMBC. Of course, she never heard of HBCU either until I explained it to her a few years ago, so take that for what it's worth.

Quote:
"We have a president who has spent 25 years building this university, and now he wants to build athletics," Hall said.
Insert joke here.

Most importantly...

Quote:
Hall said he envisions the arena playing host to 12-20 events a year, from concerts to speakers series. He mentioned George Mason's 10,000-seat Patriot Center (which actually is now called the EagleBank Arena) as a venue that's "a very robust business."
I'm assuming that 12-20 bit is non-volleyball and basketball related, but if they can lure acts away from whatever the dump downtown wants to call itself and Merriweather Post in Columbia, it could be a boon to the department. If not, then we're in trouble.

I can definitely see this hosting concerts with no problem. Imagine it stealing events from downtown like Ram's Head because anyone in the suburbs won't have to fight for parking. They could sell it out just a out every night if they want over the summer.

That would be wonderful. Like I said in our home thread, every sport at UMBC is fairly descent. We just really suck when it comes to Men's Basketball. I look at a coaching change as the final piece to our puzzle.

The goal of any non-UMBC events should be to pay off the arena and fund the athletic department so that they can consider lowering the student athletic fees, which probably piss off a lot of students.

Not sure if this link has already been shared, but I hadn't seen it:

A real good look at what the new arena will look like. The Hall of Fame near the entrance is a neat feature.
