Re: 2017 America East Recruiting Thread

I used to question why Albany brought in the volume of JUCO's it did simply because no other schools were doing it (to the extent Albany was) but it became pretty evident many years ago that this is how Brown was going to run his program; and it works for them and is within all the guidelines and parameters as far as I know them- so whatever works, go for it.

Boso your right. No one cares about losing teams. I'm pretty sure Albany fans would have a problem with brown and all the jucos if they were losing on top of all the transfers. All I have to do is merely use the words Albany and juco in a sentence and everybody considers it an Albany hate fest. A wee bit sensitive yes.

Following-up on this, one of the things Albany is playing with fire a bit with the JUCO's coming for one year and then leaving is that as far as I understand it anyone can transfer but if they don't end up graduating from wherever they go to (which you have no control over) then you get dinged on your APR.....as of 2015-16 Albany's APR was 964...Maine's was 945, UMBC 946....when you slip below 930 you get hit with a scholarship reduction and can accrue other penalties if it continues over extended years (see Binghamton after Broadus):

UVM Hoop Cat - using the. Link you posted it appears for Men's Basketball 2015/16 UA was at 995 while UVM was at 990. So for now UA looks safe. Of course I may have read the charts wrong.

Yeah, I believe you read it wrong- think you're looking at 2015-16 Stony Brook, which is 995- Albany is 964.

Of course I read the chart wrong but after further review I believe UA ia about the national avg and better then 4 or so other AE Men's Basketball teams so though it's not great UA doesn't seem to be in a dangerous position.

I hope some of you guys realize if a player transfers out in good academic standing he doesn't count against the school he is leaving (GSR)

Re: 2017 America East Recruiting Thread

Not that this constant dick measuring between some Albany and Vermont fans isn't entertaining, during the off season, but the idea that both programs can't be strong, solid, consistent, whatever adjective you'd like to choose, is just silly. The conference is better when there are teams that win. The better the conference is, the better seed our conference representative gets in the NCAA tournament. The greater the conference's chance to win a game and add large dollars to the school and conference coffers. We should be so lucky as to have three or even four teams as consistently good as Albany and Vermont have been.

If people feel there is a constant need for counting inches...whatever...in my opinion, both programs can be great. It's not a one or the other for me.

GSR and APR are similar but two different measurements. For APR, a school gets points if a player remains in good academic standing for each term a student stays enrolled in school- so it effectively rewards good students who stay at the school to graduate- even if someone is in good academic standing if you leave school you still get dinged- I don't think the NCAA wants to see a revolving door at schools.

It's pretty interesting, a 930 which is the minimum before penalties, means 50% of a school's scholarship athletes are in good academic and remaining at the school- so it's a pretty low bar.

APR is based basically on a 4 year avg therefore if a school is around the National Avg. it's hard for them to fall below the 930 benchmark in one year so I think most AE teams are safe.

This is true, though this data is only thru 2015-16 so isn't taking into account last year and this upcoming year...seems like Maine could potentially fall under given transfers from last year and this year and their previous average.

Re: 2017 America East Recruiting Thread

UNH just got a transfer in 6'2 SG Mark Carbone from the University of San Diego. He is from CT and played at East Catholic High School in Manchester, CT.

Out of high school, he had offers from Hartford, UNH, and San Diego, and he signed in the early period with San Diego. He only averaged 2.8 PPG in 14.8 mpg in his freshman season. Out of high school was known as a decent athlete and good 3-point shooter, but did not shoot well at San Diego.
