Re: 2017 America East Recruiting Thread

I agree that there is probably more to the story than just attending the same events or having similar connections in basketball circles. These guys have known each other for 25 plus years having played with each other at Catholic. I bet there is a competition aspect to it. In addition, they trust each other's ability to assess talent, character, and the like. Therefore if one of them offers a kid the others would be more comfortable doing the same knowing the values that went into that decision.

Begs the interesting question, Does anyone know what the relationship is like between Becker and Lonergan these days? I know it was pretty icy when Lonergan took Kopriva with him to GW, and also when Lonergan recommended Turner over Becker, and in turn GW was the only school in the country we denied Four to transfer to....

My ideal scenario is that Lonergan, since he's such an unbelievable recruiter, would maybe point some of the kids that wouldn't fit the A10 the best towards Vermont- or even some of the bench GW kids that might be exploring a transfer, towards UVM. But if he and Becker aren't pals anymore then I doubt that is the case.
I have no personal knowledge of where Becker and Lonergan stand at the moment but I will never forget listening to an interview Lonergan gave to Rob Ryan on ESPN radio after his press conference being announced as the new head coach at GW. When Rob Ryan informed Lonergan that Becker was named the interim head coach Lonergan said something like "while he's going to need to make a decision about joining my staff quickly because I can't wait around."

I remember Rob stating he was kind of shocked that Lonergan wouldn't be excited for his assistant having a shot at the job and instead worrying about filling out his own staff at GW. Based on that and that we haven't played them yet it wouldn't surprise me if things are still a bit raw.

Don't know why that would be a surprise. I don't think that it was any secret that Mike Lonergan was always about Mike Lonergan, but that's why he had a .700 winning percentage, recruited many of the best players in school history in a tiny window of time, and why he's now making probably 800K at George Washington and doing a terrific job.

I'm sure there's also probably something to the fact that Lonergan spent a ton of time at D3 Catholic as HC, and then Maryland assistant before his first D1 job and Becker got his first D1 job...with polar opposite resume and basically because Lonergan hired him to Vermont.

Sadly, In life most people wish you well- but even your closest friends may not wish you to do *too* well.

Re: 2017 America East Recruiting Thread

If Lonergan wanted him on his staff I don't see the grapes being too sour. They dont Have To Best Friends. Lonergan of course would recommend a senior assistant first. They may have had a tiff over Kopriva but guys tend to get over small things quickly. Given Koprivas lack of success I don't think Becker is that upset about it. They are both still close to patsos too.

I think Lonergan Becker and pats is share a common belief that a kid who has skills already developed have a higher ceiling because they have a lower floor. Matt o brien said this about uvms philosophy a few years ago.

It could be why uvm doesn't take many projects and you never see that crazy improvement of a player. Uvm players come in ready for the most part atleast on offense. A small jump to a devolved player is equal to a large one on a project player.

it's all relative and I'm sure uvm still looks at kids like wills who has a seemingly high ceiling and a very unrefined game. Maybe wills ceiling is only so high though. Sometimes players just can't develop consistent jumpers. It is tougher for longer er armed players to get that consistent stroke. Either way they thought he was worth a scholarship and we're right.

I do think we still need a project center every now and then of the team. Becker has shied away from this too much. Instead of recruiting a new freshmen that realizes he won't play much and transfer every year we spend that scholly on a big who sits the bench for 3 years and gives us possibly 2 years with a legit center

If you're going based on offers can add Jack Nunge to that list as well- Iowa, Clemson, and Vanderbilt.

Not just that but also being realistic. Walker and Wright are both in or right around the top 100 of players in their class. Getting either one would be fantastic for sure.

Of course not a difficult choice! I was just wondering how the coach(es) from San Diego find a guy that plays in Manchester, CT??

To be specific Chris Gerlufsen was the Associate Head Coach of Hartford...now he's at San Diego.
