If you're asking has Shungu ever dunked in a game then you must not have gone to any or few rice games.. And I'll agree the better comparison "athletically" would be tyrone and kendrick but remember we're talking athleticism. Kendrick is raw , nice jumpshot, questionable handles he's got time to improve and he's listed at 6'5. But one can argue shungu and conley at this point in their career as pure basketball players is a better debate. He reminds me almost of Geri Guillory who played at BHS but has a couple inches on him I think was listed at 6'3. Shungu is 6'1 (unofficial stat). I agree with a year at prep to really mature and play against better competition and that could possibly get him more looks.

I would have him walk on or postgrad and offer him. We won't always have a cam ward as third string PG and you do need one. I think he can fill that role. If he goes pg for a year we will have some scholarships open 2017

Conley was the one that got away. What a motor. I remember him mostly from AAU and how he just got stronger as the weekends went along. Saw him dominate against great competition in DC and again in Providence with Lonergan watching. I thought Lonergan was there protecting his prize. Wrong.

He was there to see much better/higher ranked players to be sure. Lonergan was always playing chess while the rest of the coaches were playing connect four.

George Washington is currently ranked 20th in the country btw.

As for Shungu, he looks much different since I last saw him. He's way more physical looks like he's added muscle and his agility has improved. He rose for that dunk on that steal awfully quick. Doesn't look like a below the rim player like he used to.

I'd be all for adding him as a walk-on.

I'm not worried about missing out on conley. After talking to a girl who went to his high school I asked if she knew him. Her response was he always use to grab my ass and I hated it. That convo got pretty awkward quick. I'm glad we didn't get him.

Not anymore. They got beat by 20 last night to Depaul (at team that was under .500). Lonergan is an excellent coach but I do think he missed out on a talented player in his backyard. Conley scored 1,000 pts. at UNH and would have been a solid player at UVM. It happened to be Lonergan's first year at UVM and he just didn't believe kids growing up in Vermont were D1 caliber. Ironically that year there were 2 of them in Burlington (Bergmann, Conley).

Conley was really athletic, could drive, couldn't really dribble or shoot, but he did put up 1000pts on bad New Hampshire teams. He would have been a nice rotation player on our Vermont teams, but I never once felt we "missed out" on Conley.

Re: Vermont HS BBall prospect discussion

I'm friends with someone on FB who is close with Ben Shunga, and they mentioned that he received his first full ride scholarship after his big game the other day. No mention of what school though, maybe SMC?

What was the decision to take Bergmann at the time I never really knew? I thought Bergman was above avg at best nice touch around the rim and the potential he could have with his size but I don't really remember him at UVM. I personally would've taken Tyrone out of the two could've been a nice addition in the backcour but I also understand the decision not to go with him as i agree they didn't really 'miss' out.

I don't think SMC offered shungu but maybe a D2 or D1 school? It would be somewhat public knowledge i feel like but still a long season so I"m not surprised if some schools start showing interest. I still think he benefits from a year at prep but a full ride is a full ride if he thinks he's ready. We'll see as the season goes and evidently Patrick Gym is the spotlight if they make it. I've been hearing a lot of good things about MAU (6'6 forward handles the ball well and Senior guards) and I know burlington and Rice play them around the beginning of January. It's a saturday game so I'm sure there will be some coaches to watch both teams then.

Looks like SMC has offered Shunga, at least according to his Verbalcommits page.

I know his older brother played there as well, so it may be an old courtesy offer that's been around for a while.

The short version of this story (as I remember it), presented in bullet points...

*Bergmann commits early to Quinnipiac, during Fall 2006. From what I had heard, UVM only had cursory interest in him at that point.

*UVM fills available scholarships (Evan Fjeld & Garret Kissel I believe)

*Q-Pac fires coach (Joe DeSantis, I believe).

*Bergmann "decommits" from Q-Pac (enter speculation as to whether he left because of DeSantis, or whether he was informed he wasn't in Tom Moore's plans...both plausible).

*UVM has a scholarship (actually 2, I think) open up.

*Given the circumstances, UVM adds Bergmann in the late signing period.

So yeah, in theory neither one was each other's first choice. But they ended up together. That's life.

Bergmann was originally committed to Quinnipiac but then there was a coaching change at Q-Pac and I think we had a transfer so he ended up being a late addition/late signing. Wasn't like he was someone we were targeting out of HS. I thought Bergmann was a serviceable big off the bench by the time he was a senior. Always need a kid like that on your team.

Conley was pretty clearly the better player though for sure out of Conley/Bergmann.

Re: Vermont HS BBall prospect discussion

This does not need to divert into a 'why didn't UVM take Tyrone Conley' thread. Tyrone was a nice player, could have helped sure, but he played at UNH and did some nice things, so that's in the past. This should be about the future.

Burlington plays at Mt. Anthony January 2nd

Rutland plays at Burlington on January 4th

BHS-Rice round 1 is January 7th

On January 16th, Mt. Anthony is at Rice - only time they come to Chittenden County unless they make the semifinals at Patrick.

So, for those of us in Chittenden County, those would be some games to go to.
