Re: Vermont HS BBall prospect discussion

From what I saw Shungu can do whatever he wants out there. If Gray had returned it would have been ridiculous how badly Rice would be destroying teams.

Selfishly, I'd love to see Shungu spend a post-grad year at Northfield Mount Hermon and then become a Catamount in 2017 when we will definitely need to replenish the guard corps. I wouldn't mind adding him for 2016 potentially either...

^Agreed. He is definitely a D1 talented guard. If i'm in his inner circle a year at prep would mold him and give him experience and certainly would see playing time at the college level. I personally would love him at UVM given in a few years he could really step into that role. Great handles (although two possessions garrison got the better of him), jumper looked solid, went to the basket well, Showed some strength . He's got a high ceiling but prep could really craft him and he wont have to worry about teams double teaming on a regular basis. Sidenote: UVM staff and players at the game last night as well as Siena college.

fyi those that missed the game n were curious it's in the archives at nsnsports.net..

Final four predictions: MAU, RICE, BHS, RUTLAND (kinda early but from what i've seen)

Prep is such a no-brainer for Vermont HS kids. Using NMH as an example, there's like 10-11 kids that will be playing at D1 schools, let alone the other kids that will end up at academic D3. Just practicing against those kids day in and day out will improve you immensely.

Further, the exposure to D1 coaches they get is ridiculous. At the scholar roundball classic on the day I was there I saw coaches from:

Virginia
Virginia Tech
Minnesota
Miami
California
UConn
Davidson
Northeastern
UMass-Lowell
Drexel
William & Mary
Albany

Plus a bunch more I'm forgetting

Do prep schools offer scholarships or financial aid? I think that may have an impact on Shungu's decision. I believe the offer from Bryant, which was previously mentioned, was for him to pay his own way for a red-shirt year. He probably goes where ever he can play for $0 out of pocket.

Does anyone know what Josh Hale is doing after he graduates? Seems like he's good enough to play somewhere.

Shungu will be a sought after PG with a year of prep by schools. Has a college physique to him, and from what I can see has improved each year. Maybe he goes somewheres now for 0$ but does he see playing time? Maybe he joins Kendrick next year at VT academy? Like an earlier post stated prep for VT kids is a no brainer. Hale can play next level, I think D2 maybe a D1 school looks at him .. BHS certainly isnt 9-1 without him.

I believe that prep schools offer only financial-need-based aid, although that can be substantial. The private schoool FA application can be as hideous a task as for college (much worse than FAFSA, more similar to CSS College Profile, for my fellow sufferers). Don't think there's a lot of merit-based aid, either.

In any case, I'd think that a kid going to a good prep school like NMH and hugely increasing his visibility for college would be much better than paying for a red-shirt year at the University of X.

Yea I could see uvm offering this year if he would pay for his own rs year one just like Bryant. That more has to do with pgs on the roster now then his talent.

And, just as there is in college, there is prep school recruiting. So, the better the player, the more options a kid is going to have when picking prep schools. Kendrick Gray was recruited by multiple ones before deciding on Vermont Academy. I'm sure the financial aid stuff is part of the recruiting process, as well.

Good for him. Wasn't sure if he was a D1 prospect, so good to see.

If true I think it's a good offer to make. He has vastly improved and will continue to get better.

Re: Vermont HS BBall prospect discussion

Depending on what other variables there are with our roster, I'd be willing to pick him up and redshirt him. If all 13 scholarships are full, we can probably afford to have 2 guys sitting out the year (for either developmental redshirt, transfer, injury, etc.). Our problem this year is that we have 2 guys sitting out the whole year...and 2 scholarships open.

Re: Vermont HS BBall prospect discussion

We currently have 2 scholarships to give for next season- 2 unused this season + O'Day. We have Lamb coming in, if Speidel isn't ready for the other then that leaves 1 more open/2 more depending on Speidel.

the case in point for giving Shungu one and redshirting him and having him grow sits right on UVM bench: Kyle Cieplicki. Kid already way more of athlete than Kyle and to me seems like a guy who would jump at chance and be good teammate and want to grow to be what Kyle was jr senior years, a very good contributor.
I also just really hope people got my AJ Kennell joke re Shungu being recruited by UVM.
