Re: Maine fans: a plea for sanity

Myers has been dismissed from the team and will not return, McKennon has joined rapper Chance on tour and will not return, and Eze has had surgery and will sit out next season. I'm not even sure who is on the roster anymore.....you'll have to check for yourself.

Yikes, what a season. Top players breaks teammate's jaw in locker room and promising point guard leaves team to go out on tour with rapper. Plus four players transferring out.

I don't see how Walsh survives after next season.

Well, Walsh does have the carrot of plenty of playing time to dangle in front of possible recruits. I really hope he can come up with something. Having the team with the RPI of 331 in our conference isn't what we want.

Could you elaborate? As in, he's part of Chance the Rapper's tour? Or as in he's just following the tour around like Chance the Rapper is his personal Grateful Dead? If it's the former, and he's officially part of the tour somehow, that might be an upgrade to basketball in Orono. Sorry guys.

Yeah, but the real question is: What does Cimbollek think about all this?

Re: Maine fans: a plea for sanity

Losing Myers is a tough blow for Maine from a talent perspective- that being said, after what he did, did anyone actually feel he should be able to re-join the team at Maine? I definitely don't- putting a teammate in the hospital on purpose isn't something you can just move past. Not to say the leadership doesn't share in some of the blame as well.

Tough times right now at Maine- looking at talent on paper I'm not sure how they win 5 games next season- and it's gotta be pretty awkward knowing that in May 2017.

Where does this kind of leave everything?

"Wes is not with the team anymore. When the season ended, we sat down, he and I have had very direct and frank conversations about what he needed to do," Walsh said on the program. "It didn't work out. We made the decision right after spring break that we were going to move on. Wes is not going to be part of the team. Hopefully he finds success." Walsh also added he'll be getting his degree, and a source indicated he will likely try to finish his eligibility elsewhere.
Quote:
"He had an opportunity, and this is true," Walsh said. "I'm not making any of this up, he had a chance to be an opening act as an R&B singer for Chance the Rapper. He left, he made arrangements to finish up his classes but felt like this was an opportunity he couldn't pass up."

In addition, Walsh announced on the program forward Vincent Eze underwent extensive hip surgery Tuesday, which would leave him out for the season. The team had initially believed it could be career-ending, but later learned it was not as damaging as once thought.

"He's not going anywhere," Walsh said on the show. "Feel bad for Vince, he's come such a long way because he really, really helped us this year and has an incredibly bright future. At first, we thought it was more severe, there was some talk about it being the end of his career."

Re: Maine fans: a plea for sanity

At this point we know the following players are on the team and on scholarship next year:

Aaron Calixte
Ilker Er
Duncan Douglas
Celio Araujo
Dusan Mastorovic
Ilija Stojililkovic
Danny Evans
Isaiah White
Andrew Fleming
Mike Antoms

That's 10.

Eze is on scholarship but will miss the year. I'd assume he could get a sixth year from the NCAA (already redshirted).

Garret Beal has another year of eligibility but hasn't been healthy or played in a dog's age. I don't know if he will be back.

CJ Ward and Garvey Melmed are still around I believe but both are probably only going to be on scholarship if scholarships are unused. I would guess.

That is brutal.

What is known about the talent from the 3 newcomers, Douglas, Antoms, Araujo?

Re: Maine fans: a plea for sanity

Very cool for McKennon. Never pass that stuff, glad he's doing it.

As for the team...Walsh only has 1 year left on his deal, right? There's been no extension signed has there? If not, this is his last year. If he doesn't finish higher than 8th again, and the team simply isn't competitive, does that mean a clean break and say thanks, but this isn't working out before the University ties itself into more years of this? They have to have seen enough of a sample size to know it's pretty bleak, all other "challenges" be damn, they're worse off win-loss wise than they were 5 years ago. Who would have thought?

Say what you will about how Ted Woodward left the program and the trend it was on (and his record given what he inherited vs. what Walsh interited)...he did manage to only finish 8th twice and had 5 top 5 finishes.

Just seems like Walsh can't keep guys on campus (this is ultimately on him, and not the "epidemic" of transfers at the end of the day), nor can he coach the guys he has to any semblence of winning.

Maine probably gives him a longer leash, but frankly, if he hasn't signed an extension yet, it's certainly a do or die year for him.

Maine adds another JuCo guard, Trae Bryant, from Cape Fear CC: http://bangordailynews.com/2017/05/1...?ref=SportsBox

Played one season at UNC-Asheville before Cape Fear.

How Maine will be is a big mystery- a lot of these guys have experience just not at Maine.

Of interest- Bryant played in the NCAA tournament (actually got in the game) for Asheville.

Will he be the first player to suit up for the Black Bears who has prior NCAA tournament experience?

Interesting...how does a guy go from a Division I team that made the NCAA tournament, in which he played, to a Junior College???

First off lets be real he played 2 minutes in a 30 pt blowout in the NCAAs!

Secondly with his 1st year DI stats he probably wasn't going to draw much DI attention as a transfer and/or he probably didn't want to sit a (another yr - he sat most of his 1st DI year) year. So he went JC, played and still has 2 years eligibility.

Third he chose a place where he thought he had the best chance to play, winning was probably secondary at this point in his career.
