It's only been 14 games, I don't know if we'll actually win anything but I feel like we've been given an chance to change the culture of the program and I just hope we get enough time to do it.
He'd have to pull a Pat Chambers and essentially get UMBC two 20 win seasons to the NCAAs in 2 years to be gone in that amount of time. Anything is possible, but that BU team's cupboard was a lot fuller. Chambers coasted off Wolff's players, got him his big job, that he's likely to be fired from soon.

Odom is doing more with less early on. You have every right to be optimistic. He looks like an actual good basketball coach. I don't think this team under Thomas has a 10-4 record.

Having lived through two transitions and not really missed a beat, I appreciate a Vermont fan chiming in so thank you.

Aki just didn't have the Xs and Os. He could recruit as evidenced by the talent on this team and he is a great guy. But Odom and his staff really can coach.

Maura was a great find as a JuCo All-American. I think Lamar and Curran show promise but next year is going to be a make-break recruiting class.

The UMBC coaching change is much greater than the player change, but I don't see it as X's and O's as much as getting the players to understand that they can do it. I just haven't seen any evidence of the old hangdog expressions on the team's faces this season.

UMBC may be back in the Mid-Major Top 25 Poll this week. Here are some articles I found. UMBC basketball is getting some recognition in the media.

http://www.midmajormadness.com/2017/...es-will-darley

Found a cool article on Jourdan Grant. Ryan Odom had the following to say about him "He is like a Swiss army knife," said Ryan Odom, the first-year UMBC head coach. "He has done a little bit of everything for us. He is a strong defender; he is a guy who is very unselfish. He wants to do what it takes win. He is a great student, and I love him to death"

That Towson loss is more and more disappointing as they start 0-4 in CAA play. Richmond is 3-0 in the A-10, which would have made THAT win all the more sweeter.

Team is playing very well right now. Have to beat Hartford on the road and then we have two tough games back-to-back to show where we are in the pecking order.

Surprisingly, very little from the Baltimore Sun. At least in 2007-2008, there were full stories from them by January.

Jairus is about eight games from making the career scoring list (950 points).

If he stays healthy, I project him to catch Brian Hodges but probably not much higher. Really impressive for just 80 games or so.

Jairus' scoring is down slightly over the past two games so it might end up being a little longer to make the career list.

The next five games are going to be tough as we go @Vermont , Albany, @UML, @ST onyBrook, UNH.

We're only three conference games into the season but here are some interesting conference-only stats:

3-point shooting:
  1. Darley - 58.8%
  2. Maura - 54.5%
  3. Lyles - 53.8%
  4. Sherburne - 46.2%

We're shooting 82% from the FT line as a team. We're averaging 12 3-point makes per game. We have 61 assists and a 1.6 A/TO ratio as a team. We've also racked up 29 steals in those three games.

Not so great: Called for 44 fouls in three games. Opponents have one more FT attempt than we do. We have 38 turnovers against teams that don't press.

My team MVP so far? Has to be K.J. Maura ... 8.5ppg, 4.6apg, 2.6 A/TO, 1.8spg. Shooting 44% from 3-point and 84% from FT. I think the offense runs at its best when he's leading the break.

A 2.6 A/TO ratio is Jay Greene type of point guard play. Something we've been missing for a long time. How the national JuCo assist leader and JuCo All-American got missed at our level is baffling. I'm so glad we have another year of watching him play.

Maura got missed because of his height. Even Maine thought about him and passed up.

Probably 95% of the time, his height plays at D1. The only game where he really had a problem was Virginia Tech.

Though KJ's a bit shorter than Jay Greene, I imagine that Jay had the same challenge.

Just need to shake off that abomination of a basketball game.

UMBC needs to use the mid-week layoff to regroup and rebound against UML on Saturday.

Have to fix our confidence in the half-court offense. Two straight games we really struggled because we don't have the same confidence as a transition offense.

I really don't care we lost. I knew Brown was really going to pull all the stops to avoid 0-4. I just wish we had played better.

Re: 2016-2017 UMBC Retrievers Thread

My fiancée has become a fan after coming to a few games and watching others on TV with me. She and I sat courtside for the Citadel game. She got hooked on college basketball. She even has UMBC apparel now.

She texted me from the airport this afternoon and said, "I just saw Rodney, Jairus and the whole team!" They were on their way to Stony Brook.

I'm a lucky guy.

They flew yesterday? It's only a 5 hour bus ride, I figure that's cheaper than going to McArthur or JFK.

Yeah, I think they took Southwest to Long Island (Islip). It's a 33-minute drive from MacArthur. Maybe this was one of the things that Odom wanted to upgrade.
