Interesting...though Lyles was originally an NC State recruit out of HS..then VCU, and probably feels he can play at that level. I think he's at the right level because he's a dynamic scorer but far too streaky, and is defense is a distant after thought.

He's at the right level if he wants to put up 18-20 a game and lead what will be a probably 20-win team again...but if he wants to go bigger, he probably can somewhere but won't have anywhere near same role.

If Lyles did transfer that would indeed be a big blow to UMBC, though they will still be fine because are well-coached.

I watched the first ten minutes or so. Texas A&M CC looked horrible. Couldn't hit anything, on defense they went flying at every ball fake, leaving wide open threes. UBMC was up by double digits. What happened?

I like Ish but if he wants to play significant minutes he's probably going to have to drop to D2/D3. He's definitely good enough to start somewhere at that level.

I think Ervin has been a great teammate while at UMBC but he's not a D1 player.

Both Rodney and Jairus will likely graduate this May. Both could leave if they want to go. I hope they stay because it's going to be impossible to replace Jairus and very tough to replace Rodney and not have us take a huge step backward.

Will doesn't get all the credit for this season. But Will took a huge leap forward this year and was a large reason for why we did well. He and Jairus were our two best players but I think everyone saw last night how invaluable Jairus can be running the offense and taking pressure off Will and others.

We turned the ball over 17 times before the first media timeout of the second half. So they went on a 22-3 run over 6.5 minutes. We only took 44 shots all game. We average 60 shots a game.

No Jairus really hurt us. And TAM-CC just started getting hot. They were 1-10 in the first half from 3-point and then 8-11 in the second half. We allowed them to score 50 points in the second half after only 29 in the first half.

Just far, far too many empty trips and they outscored us 36-14 in the paint.

If Lyles looks like he's done with college (which is a possibility academically since he had a transfer year and ate half of a season after that), he may be looking to turn pro overseas with Darley. If he is graduating, I can't blame him for that, but it would be nice to see him play one more year to get into the NCAA's one more time.

If Lyles leaves as someone speculated, back to the drawing board.
We were 7-25 last year and finished 21-13 this season. How the fuck is that a paper tiger?

You know what? Fuck you. You're a sanctimonious asshole. I'm tired of overlooking your bullshit.

OK, thanks for the recap. I switched channels figuring the game was going to be a UMBC rout. I was stunned when I saw the final score. Oh well, congrats on a the progress made this year. Darley will be hard to replace, a 6'7" guy who's deadly from beyond the arc.

If you're hopeless like me, here's a full game video of Portmann's team in January where he had 20 points:

And, if you check the top right corner, you'll see a second game against the same team in February.

Re: 2016-2017 UMBC Retrievers Thread

I already miss college hoops. Those 34 games flew by, didn't they?

With Max Portmann signing and Lyles confirming he is returning, I'm curious what folks think the starting lineup will be next season?

David Park is a potential wild card as he red-shirted and I only saw him play in the Black v. Gold scrimmage. But he's a 6'5" wide shouldered guy listed as a guard. I have no idea what his skill set will be.

It will be interesting to see what kind of leap forward Lamar makes this summer. I think the 4 is his if he earns it through better perimeter shooting and less handsy defense.

Right now, my guess for the starting five are:

1. KJ Maura
2. Jairus Lyles
3. Joe Sherburne
4. Arkel Lamar
5. Max Portmann

The reason I put Portmann over Gerrity is because of Portman's jump shooting out to 12-14 feet. Without Darley, we're going to need a big that can do that and Nolan is much more of a back-to-the-basket kind of guy that is most effective within about 5 feet.

The wild card, as I mentioned, is Park. If he's a good shooter and can play solid defense, I could see him starting over Lamar and then Arkel off the bench to spell both Sherburne and Park. Otherwise, it will probably be the reverse. I think, in hindsight, redshirting Max would have been the best way to go. He looked a little overwhelmed by the pace of play at times, especially in conference play. But as an athletic 6'9" guy who has a reputation as a good perimeter shooter, he could step up and steal Darley's spot if he has a strong summer and builds confidence to match his athletic abilities.

Rodney will probably be the first guard off the bench to play the 2 or the 3 when we go small and quick, with Jordan backing up Maura.

It doesn't leave a lot of minutes for Schweitz, Brent, or Ervin. Malcolm is a senior so I think he'll stay and graduate. He also has the best potential to revert to form and provide a big boost off the bench. Schweitz and Ervin are both sophomores so I wonder if they stay or try to go play more elsewhere.

Also, very fortunately, Jairus decided to come back for a fifth collegiate season.

Well, looks like UMBC has their high-major level replacement for Lyles.

That's a good pickup for Coach Odom and staff.

So, if UMBC has Lyles and Council together next season, they will be competing again. It's a guard dominated league.
