Re: 2016-2017 UMBC Retrievers Thread

So I went to the game and it's going to be very tough to draw any conclusions that can predict how we will do over the course of the season.

I thought the first half was very disciplined, efficient, and effective; especially on defense. We held them to 17 points and I think about 26% shooting. Offensively, we moved the ball and made open perimeter shots.

Coming out of the halftime break, it's easy to understand how a team that isn't used to winning and full of new players and a new scheme could take their foot off the throttle. We started turning the ball over with sloppy play and weren't quite as aggressive on defense. As a result, we were actually being outscored by Hood at one point in the second half. Three quick 3-pointers helped us salvage a 44-44 second half score line.

As far as player impressions go:

Jairus is still the same silky smooth guy despite a taped thumb and his middle and ring fingers taped together. Will can be Jekyll and Hyde; when he's confident he can be a conference POY caliber player. When he starts making mistakes, he's incredibly hard on himself. Joe played well but would probably like a couple of his looks back.

Ben Grace played very well, hitting four threes and playing defense on their PG. Obviously, with a healthy Grant, Maura, or Elliott he's not starting but he looks like he's lost weight and come into his senior season ready to contribute leadership.

I thought Curran displayed athleticism I hadn't predicted, taking a couple alley-oops for back door dunks, which is something we haven't had since House graduated.

But what can we tell from this game, especially without three guards who will all absolutely contribute this year? I think we have to look at the differences from the bench. I absolutely respected Aki Thomas as a person and as a representative of UMBC. He recruited some very good players but never really got them to click together because of his coaching.

Ryan Odom's staff were very different than I recall coming from Coach Thomas' bench. They were seeing things happen before the players. They were calling out ball screens and defensive switches before the players realized them. But the second half of the game today shows they have work to do.

I think the second half, in a way, is a good thing. There wouldn't have been much to learn from a 96-34 win (or something like that) whereas a 44-point half by an outgunned D3 team is definitely something to work on before Sunday.

My guess is that Ervin, Brent, and Jabbie don't get a lot of crunch time minutes this year. Ervin and Brent are still having some confidence issues. If Malcolm gets his groove back, he will definitely see playing time because he is a talented shooter.

Re: 2016-2017 UMBC Retrievers Thread

Very Impressed with Max Curran and Arkel Lamar. Happy to see an improved Wincowski!!!

UMES fought GW hard today with a 75-71 loss. Should be a tough game considering UMBC will be on the road and its UMES's home opener. Regardless, let's get it!!!

Also, while it lasts. We are 1-0!!!

Re: 2016-2017 UMBC Retrievers Thread

While I didn't get to watch the game, here are some notes:

1) I know we are a shooting heavy team (especially from 3) but I would have liked to see more driving to the basket and drawing fouls. This is after seeing us only having 7 free throw attempts and making only 3 compared to Hood's 16/20.

UMES:

2) Used a full court press to cut the deficit against GWU on the road. Bakari Copeland had 21 for UMES in 25 minutes before fouling out. Here is what the UMES coach had to say about UMBC.

“The UMBC team is a very scrappy team,” Collins said. “They shoot the ball as well as George Washington does and they can shoot it one through five. We are going to have our work cut out. Hopefully we’ll have the home-court advantage and our fans come out and support us.”

I think tomorrow could be a high scoring affair for both teams like last year.

Delaware State shot 49% from the floor and lost 72-61 to Texas Southern. They seem to play slow so it'll be interesting to see if we can push tempo and if they can adjust.

Re: 2016-2017 UMBC Retrievers Thread

UMBC 2-0 for the first time since 2007-2008 after beating UMES 77-73.

Few Thoughts

1) Free throw shooting was overall solid (25/34) vs. 6/10 for UMES. A big difference factor down the stretch.

2) Does anyone think we were shooting too many 3's in the first half?

3) Bakari Copeland, UMES's best player, got into foul trouble which helped UMBC build a solid lead before getting close again.

4) Darley and Lyles were great offensive sparks for the team tonight. I cannot say enough about those two.

5) Odom's style is definitely very fast paced - saw some great ball movement to create open shots for others.

6) As many eluded, working to break the press will be the next task at hand.

7) Kudos to KJ Maura for controlling the ball for most of the game and really being a scrappy defensive player.

8) Arkel Lamar led the team with 8 big rebounds and a block. He is listed as 6 foot 5 inches, but definitely plays bigger.

On to the next match against Delaware State. Hopefully if I get out of work on time, I will be able to go attend.

Re: 2016-2017 UMBC Retrievers Thread

I haven't seen much from people regarding their initial thoughts on the team so I figured I would share mine as a long time fan and reader and a first time blogger. The team itself has promise offensively but worries me defensively from a guard standpoint. Elliot will hopefully turn his game around as he did not impress me much at all last year but obviously has ability. Lyles can score the ball as well as last year but I hope as we begin playing tougher competition we begin to see him turn into a tenacious defender. Grant seems to have made small improvements in his game offensively, I could also see him being a 'lockdown defender'. Maura has impressed me, I hope he does not turn into a typical undersized guard that wants to go too fast at all times. Sherburne and Darley have not impressed me anymore than they have in prior campaigns, I think we can count on quality games from them. Gerrity I think will surprise many people. He has proved he is more committed to rebounding, and if he can prove he can score inside he will open up the defense for the guards. My opinion on Schwietz is that he has not done one thing particularly well in his short time so far, I hope that he can offer some valuable minutes off the bench but I believe Gerrity has certainly earned the 5 spot so far. Grace and Wincowski have made a great impression on me so far. Grace is slimmer and definitely wants to be a leader to this young team. Wink appears more comfortable and I like that he is beginning to be more aggressive offensively. If his offensive game was more lethal, I think he would be more valuable than Grant and Elliot. Curran has gotten a lot of love on this forum and I am not sure why, while skilled his basketball IQ is extremely low and it is evident that he has no interest in using his size inside. He has potential, but for now that is all he has.. I hope he proves me wrong. Lamar on the other hand was very impressive. In a guard oriented game where Gerrity was not of much use due to lineups, Lamar showed tenacity defensively and was aggressive on the boards. He was definitely shaky at times offensively and did not always make smart decisions but between the two frosh's I would much rather have the ball in Lamar's hands. Would love to see Odom try a large lineup with Lyles, Elliot, Lamar, Darley and Gerrity. This is just my opinion and I know it is not worth much but i thought some might be interested. Can't wait to start interacting with you guys and go retrievers!

I think Curran is a guy that was a guard and then grew a bunch really quickly so he isn't used to playing his height. I think he will be better as the season progresses, especially if we can get a better flow when pushing tempo.

It's only two games but I cannot complain about Will's offense at all. He's got the talent to be a first team player and so far has shown that he could be even better than he was as a junior.

Re: 2016-2017 UMBC Retrievers Thread

So far, being 4-0 is a huge celebration, but now it's time to take a breath. The schedule gets a lot tougher over the next few weeks, save for the cupcake game against another D3 team in Messiah. There's still a lot to work on, you can't win too many games by going shooting .250 from beyond the arc, 1-9 in a half. We need key and role players like Elliot and Schwietz to recover soon. We need to use more than nine players per game, because we're now deeper than we've been in years.

Navy is 1-3, but they have a tough schedule and were looking at Wednesday as the first easy game for them. Even though they play tomorrow (3 games in 3 days), I think they're still thinking Wednesday is an easy win for them.

I'm planning to go. Really hope Will and Rodney play. Rod was dribbling the ball between his legs today and looked normal. During the scrimmage he was really gingerly walking around.

Did anyone watch Towson @ Maryland? Towson with their big bodies and strong emphasis on offensive rebounds gave Maryland quite the scare. They are certainly no joke and could do damage in the CAA.

Navy is definitely gonna come in hungry on Wednesday night and have already competed well in all of their games, especially against Ohio State. With that being said, we are a different team since we last faced them so i am looking forward to a good fight.

I think we can beat Navy provided we don't let them drill outside shots like they did against us last year. Navy will always play hard, plays very physically, and will be resilient.

I'm not even worried about Towson yet. I want to see how we do against Navy because I think Duquesne is way down this year. There might be a chance to pip that one.

What day of the week is Coach Odom's show? I only see one on YouTube from three weeks ago.

Re: 2016-2017 UMBC Retrievers Thread

So, some thoughts for tomorrow's game:

Navy is now 1-4 (one non-D1 win) after losing to UNC Greensboro (who beat a team that Navy lost to and then beat Navy).

The Mids are averaging about 50 shots per game and making about 21.5 of them. They hit about seven threes a game but only shoot 30% from behind the arc as a team. They also shoot about 70% from the line as a team to score a total of 64ppg.

They are giving up about 69ppg to mid-major opponents (three games).

This game is going to be the contrast of a team that plays methodically versus a team that likes to run. I am not sure that Navy can impose the defensive will necessary to keep us from running. We are a much better rebounding team (similar raw totals with one less game played) and turn the ball over less than they do.

This is not to say that we're guaranteed a win. Navy always plays hard and that cannot be discounted. Obviously, if Will Darley is out then this changes the complexion of the game somewhat. If he's playing, I think Navy has their hands full. If Rodney and Will play, I'm feeling very confident.

Of their three mid-major opponents, no one has broken 72 points. I think we need to look to hit 80 to ensure a win. I don't think Navy's offense has the pace to generate that many points (provided we don't send them to the line 30 times).

It will be interesting and fun to watch UMBC go for our fifth win in a row. After looking at the stats, I'm feeling better about the game but not guaranteeing anything.
