Wow. He was on the bench and in the huddle. I don't know what is going on. We really could have used him tonight.

It was a team violation, not an NCAA issue. I think he'll be back sooner rather than later.

Re: 2016-2017 UMBC Retrievers Thread

I was so happy to see Malcolm doing well last night. He played such an important 15 minutes and his ten points really helped us keep the lead we did until Citadel made their final push. I hope his confidence returns because I know he's capable of being a good shooter for us and we really could use him playing well to help spell Joe and still provide a threat outside.

As much as I like Aki as a recruiter and a person, all that losing really screwed with the confidence of some good players. I'm hoping that the 2OT performance by Will helps him realize he is the guy we need down the stretch because of his size and skills. It's too much to rely on Jairus to break down a zone. Will is also a good FT shooter so fouling him isn't an acceptable option late either.

Two more games left in the OOC schedule and to be four points from 10-1 is amazing. I'm hoping for a strong showing on the road against a 1-9 JMU team. After that, it's Virginia Tech and on to conference play. Hopefully, Rodney is back off suspension soon and feels more comfortable playing a role rather than needing to be "the guy."

We don't need a superstar to win games now. We need five guys on the same page who believe in one another to make a shot. I think last night would go a long way to doing that after two tough losses in a row.

Especially considering that's a game we lose from 2010-2015 by 25 points or aren't able to make the plays down the stretch to win it.

A lot of credit to Odom and his staff but a lot of credit needs to go to the players that came back. They bought into Odom's system and coaching and I think just about every one of them is better this year than they were last year.

Richmond just beat JMU on the road by 20.

I hope that portends well for us on Friday.

One take away from the past couple games is that I think it is evident that this team cannot go small in late game situations. There is not enough inside defense nor is there a strong rebounding presence. I hope the coaches realize this before we get into conference play.

9-3 heading into the Christmas break is a welcome sight.

Jairus Lyles almost certainly headed towards another AE POW honor after averaging 27 & 13 this week in a pair of wins.

Joe Sherburne now shooting 56% (!) on the year from 3, including 29/41 (71%) from distance in his last 7 games.

I hope everyone enjoys the holidays.

Wow, that's an excellent read. I wonder if the UMBC Athletic Promotions Department can get involved in PANDIS research.

Wow, what a story. I'm so happy to see this has worked for Connor. My fiancée is a clinical therapist and said PANDAS often comes up in professional conferences she attends but a lot of parents aren't aware of it.

There's definitely a disconnect between these professions regarding the basis of mental illness.

Re: 2016-2017 UMBC Retrievers Thread

Jairus has now played one full season for UMBC (32 games).

He has scored 725 points in those 32 games. If he continues on this pace he will be over 1700 points for his career at UMBC and had he been given that extra semester he would undoubtedly be our all-time leading scorer.

I'm enjoying watching him play so much and so grateful we were fortunate to get him to come play for us. He is the best offensive player we have had at UMBC since we went Division I. Terence Ward was the best I had watched play since I was a freshman in 1990. Jairus isn't the shooter Terence was, and Ward played a lot of point guard so it's possible he would have set the career scoring mark had he played the 2 all four years.

That team of 1997-99 with Ward, Kennedy Okafor, Isaac Green, Kerry and Brad Martin, Tim Hyland, Rich Giddens, Nick Grella, and others was really damn good and so fun to watch because we sucked until those two classes came along and changed everything for a little while. This year's team is not as deep but really talented.

But we are watching a once in a generation guy at UMBC and I never forget it.

UMBC has cracked the Mid Major Top 25 - the only AE team to make the Top 25!

Not sure we are the 21st best mid major, but good for the team!

I've thought that UMBC has looked good in their games so far, but I'm not sure they looked this good. In any case, congrats, and I hope it isn't the kiss of death. The coaching staff at UMBC really deserves a lot of praise.

I didn't mean to disrespect the UMBC players in the last post, because they have been exceptional, but the plan of making UMBC into a winning team has worked perfectly so far.

Strange, it works for me.

If you google Virginia Tech Basketball Board, you will find their thread on sportswar.
