I am pretty shocked too in terms of how high we jumped from the previous week.

Very happy though of achieving a ranking. I can only imagine how high the ranking could have been if UMBC beat Towson and/or Richmond.

Here is a question.

We know how Joe Sherburne has been on fire in terms of his 3 point shooting ability but also in how he seems to have himself in the right position for offensive rebounds. Overall smart player.

How does a guy like him get missed by everyone? I do not know how accurate verbal commits is but his only offer was UMBC.

Once a player commits, they usually pull off the other offers.

Worked that time!

Tomorrow will be interesting. Nothing to lose here. A bad loss doesn't negate a fantastic turnaround. A close loss would definitely be appreciated as VT is going to be a mid-pack ACC team.

We need Rodney back, playing like he did as a freshman. I love Jourdan's energy and the change he gives over Maura but this is a perimeter shooting team and he isn't a shooter.

Do not have ACC network, may have to go to Buffalo Wild Wings to watch this one.

It's on ACC network, which is on WatchESPN. Thanks for the headsup.

I'm surprised that with Joel leaving there's been no activity on the recruiting front. David Park will be taking Will Darley's scholarship next year. I don't think Odom has any 2017 offers made yet?

When the schedule came out I didn't like it, the only marquee team I saw was Va Tech and I didn't like seeing 2-D3 teams in the mix. I would gladly trade those 2 games for games against top 100 competition.
However we play our schedule and here we are at 9-4. I was hesitant to guess where we would be after non conference but it is better than I would have guessed.
I will attempt to guess our non conference record although I'm terrible at predicting things. .500 or 8-8 seems possible at this point, so I'll go one better and say 9-7. Which means if they win one game in conference tourney they would have 19 wins. Unbelievable! It's hard to imagine but if things go their way they could have a 20 win season, what a turnaround from the past few years. I'm thoroughly enjoying these games

KJ has been a nice addition to the team, really helps run this fast paced offense
Jairus scores a lot but he shoots a lot too. Leads conference in scoring
Will has his ups and downs, overall steady game this year, I'm always surprised when he misses a free throw
Joe has been fantastic ,
Nolan is a terrific defender who has shown some offense too leads conference in blocked shots
Jourdan needs more minutes.
Arkel has played well at times but he's a cherry picker
Max has been out muscled inside and we don't need him on the wing
Sam schweitz- I'd rather see him get some of arkels minutes and all of Max's
Rodney? Who knows what's going on there?
I hope Joel Winkowski finds a place where they just give him the ball and let him go, it wasn't going to happen here

I predict a few more departures but you never know. Success breeds happiness

UMBC lost to VT by 17. Today Duke lost to VT by 14. UMBC has come a long way already.

I'd like to say that's impressive, but it's mostly because Grayson Allen is a spoiled punk.

OK, legitimate question, UMBC is 9-4 (7-4 in D1 games) with a super-weak OOC schedule but spent one week on the Mid-Major Top 25 poll before falling out today, so they are on College Insider's radar. So barring an AE Title, will UMBC see a post-season in the CIT or CBI?

My guess is that 9-7 in the league for a 16-11 regular season probably gets them an invite to the lowest tier tourney since we have to basically pay to play.

They were such good guys too. I snuck Kennedy into the flag football intramurals for a game... like a kid in a candy store. Sully wasn't happy.

Hyland used to shoot a balloon ball from about 30 feet in the RAC. And never touch rim.

I'm enjoying watching him play so much and so grateful we were fortunate to get him to come play for us. He is the best offensive player we have had at UMBC since we went Division I. Terence Ward was the best I had watched play since I was a freshman in 1990. Jairus isn't the shooter Terence was, and Ward played a lot of point guard so it's possible he would have set the career scoring mark had he played the 2 all four years.

That team of 1997-99 with Ward, Kennedy Okafor, Isaac Green, Kerry and Brad Martin, Tim Hyland, Rich Giddens, Nick Grella, and others was really damn good and so fun to watch because we sucked until those two classes came along and changed everything for a little while. This year's team is not as deep but really talented.

But we are watching a once in a generation guy at UMBC and I never forget it.

Re: 2016-2017 UMBC Retrievers Thread

I thought we played well last night against Binghamton offensively. Defensively, we had quite a few problems. We were fortunate that the Bearcats went cold in the second half but we let them stay in the game with all those reverse layups.

I think we have some work to do with our half-court offense and some more work to do on our man-to-man defense. The half-court offensive issues worry me against a good defensive team. We've shown that as soon as we can start running again we'll score but JMU gave a blueprint on how to park the bus against us.

Re: 2016-2017 UMBC Retrievers Thread

Also, with a scholarship open I'm surprised we haven't seen any offers given out. I'm wondering if they are going to look to bring in a transfer or a JuCo to break up the classes a little bit.

We are going to lose a lot after next season assuming no one transfers (Elliott, Lyles, Maura, Grant, Brent) so I'm wondering what the recruiting strategy is going to be. That's a lot of points leaving at one time.

A transfer helps in that even if they sit out a year, they would help bridge the losses coming in 2018-19. But that season would be a huge turnover too as there would be five seniors in that class if everyone stays.

I certainly hope Odom stays that long because he's going to have a chance to completely redo the roster over two seasons starting in the Spring of '18.

He's having a lot of success early on. Anyone else concerned he doesn't stay more than two seasons? I am hoping he sticks around 4-5 years, establishes some winning culture and then if he wants to move on we've got a good basis to hire another good coach.

It's only been 14 games, I don't know if we'll actually win anything but I feel like we've been given an chance to change the culture of the program and I just hope we get enough time to do it.
