What happened to UMBC soccer? Weren't they a top 10 team a couple years or so ago?

Soccer can be cruel; thought UVM controlled the second half of the UMass-Lowell game but Lowell executed an excellent cross for the game winner.

That being said, UVM is now in full free-fall mode as it lost to Hartford tonight.

The defense and goal tending needs to be sharper.

Re: OT: 2016 Men's Soccer

UVM had a good game against UMass Lowell but the first goal they gave up was inexcusable. Lowell sent a soft ball into the box and instead of catching it the goaltender punched it into a Lowell player and the ball deflected into the goal.

UVM had more chances to score last night but didn't convert. Hartford's goal was a beautiful volley. Brian Wright had a one on one opportunity but couldn't find the back of the net.

This team has not lived up to expectations in conference. The defending America East champions that returned their whole front line should be finishing their opportunities especially at home.

Re: OT: 2016 Men's Soccer

UMBC has seven upperclassmen. This season was going to be a rebuilding year at best...the 2013 and 2014 teams were stacked with upperclassmen. A good number of them are currently in the USL or recently won the US Soccer Amateur Cup and just advanced in US Open Cup play for Christos FC.

Re: OT: 2016 Men's Soccer

As unfortunate as that is for Lowell, it is probably a blessing for the conference. Albany and New Hampshire are both now well inside the cutline of RPI for the tournament (college soccer follows the RPI for at large berths pretty religiously).

Albany is #17 , UNH #28 . Right now the last team in is #42 Akron. The last team out is #45 Stony Brook (43/44 are autobids).

There is a chance the AE gets 3 teams in, AND would have had four with Lowell eligible.

UVM is currently sitting at #37 (which would make it in) after their rough streak, so depending on how the last bit of the season goes for the conference, we're all looking really solid!

Re: OT: 2016 Men's Soccer

4 schools could realistically win the AE tournament, 5 if UMass-Lowell was eligible.

UVM needs to finish out the year strong. Senior day at home against UNH will be huge.

It's gonna be a wide open tournament. Binghamton is going to get to sneak in since Lowell can't qualify. The Bearcats just took down Hofstra on the road, Hofstra was no. 25 in the RPI.

In addition to Binghamton's win over Hofstra yesterday, UML defeated Boston College, Albany defeated Hartwick, UMBC topped Drexel and Hartford beat Yale. Only UNH lost to Harvard (#24 in the RPI) and I think that was a double OT loss.

With all that the AE is now a comfortable 3rd (!) in the conference rankings behind only the ACC and the Pac-12, with the 4th ranked Big East being closer to 7th than they are to 3rd. Hats off to all the teams in the AE this year.

I think any of the six teams that make the AE tournament (UMBC seems to be the likely odd man out) has a shot at winning the whole thing. Looking very good for the AE to pick up 2 at-large bids as well.
