UMBC is super young and it's very tough to sustain something like the Final Four at our level. But, I think the team is definitely still going in the right direction. Pete Caringi is not resting on any laurels.

UMBC, I don't think had any illusions of winning the AE, and despite having 0 points in 6 league games, has only 2 non-conference losses. It just goes to show how good the league is this year (the Hartford GK deserves a medal for how he played the Retrievers last weekend), and coaches weren't kidding about at-large bids.

In fact, if anyone follows fourth division soccer, which is used as summer play for college players, there were a good number of AE players who were turning pro scouts heads in both the PDL and NPSL.

Has the AE ever been this good in soccer before, or anything ever really, on a national level like this?

I don't believe so. I know it was mentioned somewhere that after UMBC's run two years ago, other coaches in the league pushed their AD's and school presidents to increase resources to their programs, not only because they didn't want a league with a UMBC and everyone else, but also in anticipation of a possible expansion of the season into the spring semester.

UVM beats UMBC tonight 3-0. Big senior day coming up against UNH.

Re: OT: 2016 Men's Soccer

UVM takes on UNH on Wednesday. With a UVM win UNH and UVM will be tied in points. What are the other final match-ups?

Brian Wright scored twice against UMBC yesterday. He has 9 goals on the season. He came into the season 5 all time at UVM on points. Does anyone know where he stands now on the all-time points list?

He's second, with 90. 116 is the record.

Also, to address that has AE soccer ever been this good, etc...well, it's kind of a long time coming. The league decided that soccer is a flagship sport where it can compete for national titles, along with lacrosse. It was one of the things that UVM used to justify dropping baseball, to bring up the sore subject. Basketball is a flagship too, for different purposes, obviously.

All schools are technically supposed to be pumping effort into these sports. For some it might have took longer than others or their definition of effort is different depending on other priorities that the AE doesn't sponsor, but UMBC's run was a wake up call to a lot that it's possible to really take it seriously. Also, given that it can easily be a 2-3 bid league annually if you have teams putting in the right resources, it's a no-brainer.

Re: OT: 2016 Men's Soccer

Thanks for the info. on Brian Wright. I don't know the player that holds the record but 116 points over a 4 year career is incredible. That kid must have been an absolute beast.

I'm really looking forward to Wednesday night against UNH. I haven't been to a game at Virtue this season and I'm excited to check out the new stands on senior night. The weather is looking decent with temps in the high 40's low 50's. This is a really important game for seeding purposes so I expect playoff style soccer.

I was able to make it back to campus and check out a game somewhat recently; really terrific new field and great setting to watch a soccer game with Redstone campus in the background.

Thank you Ted Virtue!

I had a chance to see Brian Wright over the summer as he played PDL on the west coast for a team affiliated with the Earthquakes. He looked fairly good with in his on-field awareness, but seemed to get frustrated with his teammates a little too easily. For his sake, I hope he works on that, because like I said, he spent an entire summer with a MLS-affiliated U23 team.

Re: OT: 2016 Men's Soccer

I haven't seen too much of that frustration from Brian at UVM (to be fair I've seen him play about half a dozen times) but then again he's been the go to guy all four years and he has his best friend in the striker position next to him. UVM makes it a point to get him touches often so I imagine it would be frustrating going from the being the focal point of the offense to being just another soccer play in the PDL.

Re: OT: 2016 Men's Soccer

So, in a big game for at large chances for UVM, UNH and Stony Brook today, BC is playing in the ACC prelims today against Virginia Tech. Both are safely in the tournament, based on RPI, which the NCAA follows strictly.

However, BC's record is 7-7-2. The NCAA throws out teams with losing records. So a BC loss would open up an at large spot.

Counterbalancing that, West Virginia (who are in the MAC for men's soccer) didn't make their conference tournament. But, they are the only MAC team currently inside the at large field based on RPI. So there's a potential bid thief coming from the MAC (although Buffalo or Akron would likely have an RPI inside the cutline after winning the tournament).
