Telling people the MLS sucks certainly isn't helping anything though. MLS is the closest thing we've got aside from an occasional USMNT friendly with a visiting EPL b-team and 10am EPL TV games. Everybody's aware that soccer needs an overhaul in this country from the ground up, and adopting England's relegation system would be ideal (and impossible).

But this is what we've got. The truth is Brian Wright could make the same amount of money managing an Applebees, and some EPL players make three times that in a week.

There's a few reasons why I will continue to support the league regardless of the level of competition.

One thing that may help soccer moving forward is football is being seen as more and more dangerous. This may help draw some athletes that would other wise play football.

Personally, I'm waiting for rugby to make its move, but they need to get rid of the messy politics that just got messier. I guess that will happen when our grandkids are learning the game.

Nooo, the dreaded "if more of our football players played soccer argument." Yes, numbers might go down in football due to the dangers, you are not wrong there, but that argument doesn't hold water when it comes to why US isn't good at it. And, it's not about the "athletes" - there are loads of athletic soccer players. Our country produces a ridiculous amount of athletes to go around for everyone.

Besides, the soccer culture is here in this country. The product is consumed a high level, and there is more exposure to it globally thanks to TV rights of EPL, La Liga, Bundesliga, and Liga MX (seriously don't underestimate the Mexican League - it gets higher ratings in America than MLS games on TV). The issues aren't the players, it's systemic. Soccer in America locks out its own potential because of politics, and keeping out talent because they don't have the financial means to play within the system.

Your first part to me just feeds into the complacent nature that MLS has - which is exactly what the league wants. Honestly, the league isn't better than Liga MX. There's no reason for that. People need to hear the truth and understand globally how this country actually stacks up.

And, yes for promotion-relegation. I don't think it's impossible at all here. That debate could go on for days though.

You're right on with Wright and the pay, which again sucks. Globally, a soccer player is allowed to test his true value on the open market, or teams bid on his services in the form of transfer fees. Wright was told sign with MLS, because they control everyone's contract, with no idea where he was going, and throughout the terms of that contract if you make it through, we'll tell you what team to play for, and you'll have to like it because we control you. It's insane.

While staying away from a pro/rel debate (go to Big Soccer forums for that one), a lot of people ignore that outside the super clubs, many teams don't pay that much different than MLS contracts, and many checks bounce.

Not true. Luzern FC in Switzerland is paying out more money on average. You probably don't consider that a "super team." And again, Liga MX's average salary is near double MLS. And personal source: My 2nd cousin's boyfriend played in Norway's top division for a bottom half club, and earned double what his MLS counterparts did. And yes, he got all his checks. Don't believe everything (aka anything) Grant Wahl or Matthew Doyle write.

But, to me the issue is the league owning your contract, not the franchise (they aren't real clubs in this sense because of single-entity) - it completely takes away the rights of a player to move freely, or if a transfer comes in for a player, the league gets to deem the acceptable rate, and not the franchise, when one might have a different idea of valuation. Takes away from the players earning their true market value.

You'll likely disagree. It's fine. Consider what I'm saying though, and don't be so dismissve and think I'm some Westerfeltian minion, which I'm not.

All this crap is definitely part of a larger debate, but regardless good for Brian for being able to get paid to do what he loves.

Right? The dude is playing pro sports, and selfishly he's in the best place for UVM fans to keep tabs on him. That's awesome.

Re: Wright MLS Bound

MLS is what it is; it's not high-level professional soccer- but I enjoy it because it's a great experience being able to go to Gillette for games, it's incredibly kid friendly, tickets are dirt cheap, and you occasionally will get to see some noteworthy famous or formerly famous international players.

Being able to continue to see Wright on the Revolution will be great.

I think most people would agree the best athletes in their school played football. I do think our professional basketball players and football players could be crossover stars if they dedicated themselves to it

Re: Wright MLS Bound

Did Wright get injured for Revs? Doesn't look like he's played in the first couple of games after scoring in an exhibition.

Can't really say, he's not on the bench right now against Minnesota. Staying on that topic, UMBC's Billy Heavner is on the other bench.

Revs re-acquired a forward that they had lost to Minny in the expansion draft which pushed him down the depth chart
