Good point. Matt St. Amour at 6'3 200 lbs is half the size of Cam Ward 6'2 170 lbs.

Re: OT - Matt St. Amour

1) Middlebury and NESCAC teams don't often feel the need to play D1 schools. Their conference is already competitive enough and it's not worth it for them.

2)Jeff Brown attends plenty of UVM games.

3)It's time to stop caring about St. Amour and his prospects at UVM. Appreciate his greatness for what he's done in his entire basketball career, regardless of level. Like I said, best native Vermonter basketball career since Coppenrath.

4)How about acknowledging that there are two very good basketball programs at their respective levels in this state? Take a second to step back and think about how fascinating that really is.

Personally, the marginal increase in interest would be somewhere still close to zero for me if we substituted Middlebury for Lyndon or whatever as I think any sub-D1 game played during regular season is a waste....I like playing St. Mike's as an exhibition game, it's a good tradition... that's about it for local team interest in relation to UVM.

Yeah, I was thinking more of as a scrimmage or exhibition type game that didn't count for anything.

Yeah, but who would win in Paper/Rock/Scissors contest, St. Amour or Ward? It's almost as relevant.

I'd take Clancy rugg over amour. Unless amour wins a d3 championship.

First team all AE over NECSAC POY.

You're missing the point.

St. Amour
4th all-time in scoring in Vermont HS basketball
2-time Vermont Mr. Basketball
2-time First Team NESCAC
1-time NESCAC Player of the Year
Two NESCAC titles
Pre-Season All-American (likely post-season as well from D3Hoops/NABC)
NCAA Second Round
NCAA Sweet 16 (thus far)
Most points in a single season
Career leader for three-pointers made
3rd all-time in career scoring at Middlebury

Tell me, at any level, who else matches that as a native Vermonter in terms of pure accomplishment? Only Coppenrath comes close in recent memory. That's the point I'm making. It's not who is better than who. Love Clancy, but he doesn't match that.

Only other player I can think of right now that is in that territory from VT HS impact to VT college impact is Todd Roberts- Fair Haven/St. Mike's. He had a MONSTER career at both levels. Roberts is also a superior player to St. Amour- 6'7'' and lights out 3pt shooter- think he's second all-time in made 3s at St. Mikes.

Can't really can't Mr. Basketball against him as he played in same class as Orciari and HS during an era in VT, mid-late 90s, that probably had the most overall talent state has ever seen. Roberts also won a championship in HS- not sure if Missisquoi ever did(?)

Edit: In fact, as far as accomplishments go I'd put Roberts probably above the level of St. Amour. Can read his St. Mike's Hall of Fame bio, and he's also in New England basketball Hall of Fame:

Re: OT - Matt St. Amour

Todd Roberts bio, St. Michaels:

The first native Vermonter to score 1,000 career points in men's basketball at the College, Todd is considered by many to be one of the truly elite players in Saint Michael's history. Over his remarkable career, he was named All-Northeast-10 Conference and All-ECAC three times, and NABC All-Region and Daktronics All-District twice. He was the Northeast-10's Player of the Year as a senior, and was named an All-American by both NABC and Daktronics/CoSIDA that same year. He finished his great career with 1,816 points (third all-time), and was listed among five different Purple Knight all-time Top Ten lists. He was only the second player in the College's 86-year basketball history to score more than 500 points in three consecutive seasons, and graduated owning several College records. He led the Knights to an all-time best record of 27-4 in his senior year, and during his career the Knights were 88-35 (.651 win percentage) overall, 54-24 (.692) in NE-10 play, and won one ECAC Division II and two Northeast-10 Titles. His teams made two NCAA Tournament appearances, and advanced all the way to the "Sweet 16" in his senior season. He received the College's Victor LeMieux Award for loyalty and leadership as a senior in 2001.

He's up there. Point is, for a kid from Swanton (or Fair Haven/West Barnet) to reach that level of play at any level of basketball is something that should be praised. I don't care where he played/who he could play with - you rack up those honors and performances on the court do that you deserve all the credit in the world. St. Amour will be adding those accomplishments (regional halls of fame) down the line.

The point is all the same; these VT-born players all had exceptional careers at the level of basketball they ended up at: D1 for Coppenrath/D2 for Roberts/D3 for St. Amour.

I'm taking Rugg. His accomplishments at UVM are more impressive to me.

NABC Second Team All-American honors for St. Amour.

They lost to Williams in the Elite 8 by the way. Still, great season, great career for St. Amour.
