Re: 2017 Coaching Carousel

The picture on ESPN site made Motta look 65 years old. Guy is 49. Stress, and apparently back surgery, certainly ages ya!

Between Matta and Steve Kerr, I'm going to have to be unable to move before I ever have a back surgery.
And look at Tiger Woods these days.

The only people that think back surgery is a good idea are doctors that perform back surgery.

ESPN is reporting it was not a mutual decision, and the AD felt "we were not winning the recruiting battles."

Agreed that this is very late.

Yeah, the ESPN article was quite interesting. IMO, the AD kinda threw Matta under the bus. In reality, with the money & facilities that school has along with the massive recruiting base within a couple hundred miles of the school, there is no reason for them to not be a perennial top 20 team with deep NCAA Tournament runs pretty often.

If that's an important criteria for Ohio State, which I'm sure it is, then fair or not the AD really isn't wrong. Ohio State hasn't landed a really high-profile recruit since D'angelo Russell, and that was 2014.

Ohio State is a place that should be in the mix and landing the 5-star recruit/McDonald's guys on a regular basis.

Butler's Chris Holtmann takes the OSU job.

Now the Butler job is open. Trickle down commences....

Kevin Sweeney, a mid-major CBB reporter, has Coach Becker at the top of his list to take over at Butler.

Serious praise for Becker to mentioned for that type of job.

Tom Crean would be a good hire if they go for someone established. I think Indiana was just a bridge too far for him.

Re: 2017 Coaching Carousel

Becker has recruited the mid-west well. My guess is they will go for a bigger name. Since Brad Stevens arrived on campus, Butler has established itself as a national program. That would be a big jump for Becker.

Re: 2017 Coaching Carousel

Just a gut thought...if we're talking about "Guys who didn't get the UMass job," Micah Shrewsberry comes to mind. Was an assistant at Butler for four years under Brad Stevens (who he still works for with the Celtics). Had a few other stops in the midwest, including Purdue. He'd be easy to get, and keeps with Butler's penchant for keeping things "in the family" to some degree.

Goodman says Shrewsberry, LaVall Jordan (UW Milwaukee coach, Butler alum/assistant), and Ryan Pedon a current assistant. Not a shock as that school is about keeping it in the family. Haven't taken it outside the family since the current AD left the head coaching job, it's worked and they're likely not going to change it up.

It'll be interesting to see if Holtmann is more Matta from 2006-13, or if he's Todd Lickliter and goes 38-57. We can talk about Becker walking into a nice situation at UVM, Holtmann had it even better.

It's LaVall Jordan to Butler, so UW Milwaukee is now opened: http://www.espn.com/mens-college-bas...rdan-new-coach
