Re: Vermont vs Purdue

Just booked my airfare and accommodations for Milwaukee. I did not have the forethought to buy tickets there 4 months ago like Charliemike, but I did put in a request per the UVMathletics website, so I'll see how that plays out. I assume tickets are good for both games in the night session, so I'll probably snag an upper level seat for the day games off stubhub tomorrow.

Re: Vermont vs Purdue

Purdue fan/alum here.

Figured it would be fun to discuss the game with Vermont fans.

Purdue has essentially two weaknesses this season. The first is quick slashing guards. Most of our losses, and close wins featured quick guards that could get to the rim. Our bigs are not really rim protectors this year. Last year, if an opposing guard beat his man, AJ Hammons was quick and long enough to block the shot or at least affect it. We don't have anyone that can do that this year-- neither Haas nor Swanigan are quick enough.

Our second weakness is turnovers, generally caused by really athletic and aggressive defense. Our guards are good at protecting the ball, but when our bigs are too slow to make a move to the basket, or pass out of a double team there can be real problems.

It sounds like your outside shooting could cause problems for our 4 or 5, if they are hitting. We are generally a pretty good 3 point defensive team. However, Michigan was able to kill us with a big that could shoot because we didn't make adjustments fast enough. The good thing is, we've seen it recently, so Painter should be quicker to adjust if its working.

That said, here is the positive. Our bigs are ruthless in the paint. If you do not double or triple team them immediately as the entry pass is getting to them, they will punish you badly. Even when they do get doubled, they have become better at passing out as the season has gone on. Swanigan specifically is a great passer and will find the open man.

Which leads to another other strength. We are the fourth best 3pt shooting team in the nation I believe, and this is set up because we have great ball movement and always find the open man. If we are hitting our open shots (we have been on a bit of a slump lately, but hopefully we will recover), it will be a high scoring game, on at least one side.

Lastly, with the addition of Carsen Edwards, we finally have a really athletic guard with handles who can basically do it all. Our biggest weakness last season was the press. When opponents pressed us, we had no player with good enough handles to break it. Edwards is that player this year, and he will score on a team that presses, and often. He can shoot well, drive to the hoop, and play great man defense when he is on. That said, he has been fairly inconsistent (typical for a freshman), so it's an open question whether he will show up.

I'm not looking past your team, especially since we have been beat and blown leads the last two years in the tourney. I think it will be a better game than the seeding implies. That said, I do think my Boilers win this match-up and advance to the round of 32. What do you guys think? Good luck!

Re: Vermont vs Purdue

This from CBS sports:
Toughest draw: Purdue

It’s not easy or very rewarding to be the Big Ten regular season champion, it seems. The Boilermakers could muster only a No. 4 seed, and while they get the geographically favorable positioning in Milwaukee, that about ends the list of favorableness. First comes Vermont, the America East champion which as of Sunday right ranks ahead of teams like Iowa and Illinois in the kenpom.com overall ratings. Should Purdue subdue the Catamounts and seeds hold elsewhere, next up is Iowa State, which won the Big 12 tournament and has lost just once since Feb. 7. And beyond that is a possible Sweet 16 showdown with Kansas, which some oddsmakers have installed as the favorite to win the national championship. Given the selection committee’s appraisal of the league, it’s a bad year to be the best team in the Big Ten.

Vermont is getting a TON of national love as a possible Cinderella and a popular upset pick with the Cats over Purdue Thursday night. The more I look at this match up the more I really do like it. I think we have the weapons to take down Purdue.

Can someone tell the national media that it is the AMERICA EAST, not the AmericaN East? Thanks.

And good luck vs Purdue.

At some point, this is our league's fault for picking this grammatically-clumsy name. Some will never get it right.

Watching Coach Becker search for his wife after the championship gave me a flashback to that famous clip of Jim Volvano after his team won the national championship.

We are much different team than the one who played Purdue last year. That said, we have a huge challenge ahead of us on Thursday night. It is going to take great team defense and production from the bench, which has been one of our strengths all year. I suspect with the load of Hass and Swanigan, Payen and Drew are going to need to give us some good minutes down low and Lamb and Henson stay out of foul trouble. An off night of shooting and this one could get out of hand early. I have not seen much of Purdue, what pace do they like to play? Vermont can play uptempo but prefers slower more methodical pace.

Respect the heck out of Purdue for thier welcoming of Josh Speidel last year. Classy move and from what I have seen of you guys you play the game with high character as well.

IF Vermont plays nearly perfect and Purdue is off from beyond the arc, they have a shot of winning this game. Pulling for an upset and a worst case scenario a dog fight till the end.

Re: Vermont vs Purdue

This is not the time for UVM to lose their aggressiveness. They will have to take it to Purdue and knock them on their heels to win this game. In particular the UVM bigs are going to have to use their inside passing to avoid the shot block and the guards will need to drive the lane to draw the defense out and make the inside shot possible. When UVM is in the groove and sharing the ball inside it is one unopposed layup after another. The looks on the defenders' faces have been priceless this season.

When does Vermont fly out? With snow storm coming to the NE tomorrow night I suspect they will want to try to get out of here early tomorrow and not risk being stranded until Wednesday night?

That means 3 days of bratwurst and cheese consumption before the game. They should have plenty of energy!

NCAA always pays for the charter to pick teams up and drop them off. So this is what I'd expect.

With our bigs and spot up shooters, we still prefer to play a slower half court offense. They will generally run the motion to try and get the ball in the paint and/or shoot an open three.

However, unlike last year's team we can run and play effectively up tempo, especially off of defensive rebounds when the opponent has less time to set up their defense. Hopefully Painter will see that UVM prefers a slower style from film study and will have our guys push the temporary more often. We will see.
