Re: Vermont vs Purdue

Looking for positives, found a few:

Against Purdue's bulk last year we had an all beanpole frontline of Payen, O'Day and Steidel. This year Lamb and Henson add some heft, and are very skilled. Both can finish with either hand and make threes.

Obviously neither Henson or Lamb played last year, but Wills also did not play. So his defense and other attributes will help the cause.

Our defense has been one of our strengths, and effective help defense will be needed every time Purdue gets the ball down low. UVM has been very good at this all year. I know that Purdue's bigs are like few we've seen, but they have a good plan.

They're getting out ahead of the storm, so an extra day to settle in and acclimate to the gym.

Other thoughts:

Obviously a poor shooting night, or foul trouble for key players could result in a blowout. We need to play our best game of the year to have a chance.

This is the type of team that renders Payen pretty ineffective. Hope I'm wrong, but don't expect much from him. I look for Drew to get some minutes. He is our tallest player, and has some bulk. He may come in to lean on Haas/Swanigan for a few possessions.

Our vaunted depth has become less and less of a factor. In the Albany game only Wills contributed anything from the bench.

Trae & Ernie scored 35pts against Purdue last year.

Hopefully UVM is looking at tape of recent Michigan games against Purdue.

The more I see of Purdue on replays the more I like UVM's chances and I think they can win without a perfect game. Denying Swanigan the ball has to be a big priority.

Re: Vermont vs Purdue

If UVM bigs shoot the ball decently (not great but that would even be better)) from three UVM will be in a position to win.

Of course shooting FTs well will be important.

I'm baffled that there is so little chatter about this game. The thread about coaching changes is getting far more activity. Do people just think UVM is going to get blown out? What gives?

I think that there is a great fear of jinxing the team this late in the season. I know that I have not gotten my hair cut in quite a while and the smell of unwashed socks and tee shirts has been strong at certain places during the last few home games.

No, I don't think UVM will get blown out. In fact, I like UVM's chances and feel confident that the team is focused like a laser on winning this game. As a fan I'm just doing everything I can to help them win.

A few hours before the game tomorrow Price Chopper's high priest of the dark arts is going to sacrifice a chicken and cook it for us using a method where the chicken goes around and around, like a hoop. Consuming this chicken an hour of so before the game I'm hoping will bring the team luck.

I hope we get Iowa State next. Nevada gives us trouble.

I've been more amused with the Purdue board, where it seems to be a mix of folks predicting a 30 point blowout and those ignoring UVM completely to talk about the Iowa State matchup on Saturday instead. Here's hoping the Purdue players have the same mindset.

Just out of curiosity for any Boilermakers fans that may be lurking- if your 7-2 big man is so dominant and is going to destroy us without much effort, why does he only play 19 MPG? Seems almost as if you guys hate winning.

First off, what board are you reading? Purdue's main message board is on Rivals and the Free Basketball Board is unreadable sometimes.

As for why Haas doesn't play more than 19 minutes a game? The simple answer is that when Haas and Swanigan play together, there are way too many turnovers and the offensive flow isn't great. You will see Vincent Edwards play the 4 and Swanigan play the 5 most of the time. Swanigan is a NPOY candidate and why would you play Haas over him? Also, Haas is sometimes a liability on defense when he needs to guard the 3 point line. Also, our front court depth consists of 3 players, Haas, Swanigan, and V. Edwards so you will only see about 5 to 10 minutes with Haas and Swanigan on the floor together. Ok, now I am just rambling but I hope I answered your question.

Looking forward to a fun game!

Dropping the Must Win Alert down to Code Taupe. Pressure's off, fellas. Enjoy yourselves. There are a ton of great players who never got, and will never get, the opportunity you have tonight: 40 minutes on the big stage, and all the trappings that go along with it. There are no consequences tonight. Just relish every second.
