I'm hoping Drew Urquhart can improve a lot in the offseason. Henson and Payen kind of stole the minutes over him because they were just more consistent in scoring and defense than Drew was. If Urquhart can improve and play at the level Henson was this past season and Lamb gets better on his ball handling and can be a stretch 4 even a 3 at times we could start Urquhart 5 Henson 4 Lamb 3 Duncan 2 and Bell-Haynes 1. That's a strong starting Line-Up. I know Lamb was a in-the-paint type of player most of the season but he also showed that he is a pretty good 3pt shooter now. Maybe Lamb, Henson, Urquhart all starting would clog the paint but Becker may draw up a game plan where Lamb or Henson would be spaced out on the perimeter to where they have shown they can hit shots? I just had a thought. It could be totally wrong compared to Beckers system but I guess we will see.

Re: 2017-2018 Vermont Catamounts

Unfortunately the audio hasn't been posted, but Becker was on Sports Saturday yesterday morning with Jeff Paul & Bernie Cieplicki (the only 2 redeeming hours a week on 101.3 if you ask me). I only caught like the last half of it, but he did talk a little about scheduling next year. He mentioned what we all expected, that we would see some of the regional regulars on the schedule (Ivys, Siena, Q-Pac). He said there'd probably be like 3 guarantee games (which he said have been getting harder to schedule, in light of this season). He also mentioned we might be off to the Bahamas for an exempt tournament, so that's something to keep an eye on as well. If they post the interview, I'll try to remember to link it here.

Re: 2017-2018 Vermont Catamounts

Urquhart played very well this season but he did have some foul problems. Getting his defense cleaned-up would get him more minutes I think. Neither he nor Henson seems to really enjoy banging underneath and probably both take too many near-3 and deeper shots. Both of them should try to be a little meaner and get to the rim inside. When we're up 20 they can try those 3's.

Did anyone else think urquhart seemed a step slow the second half? I wonder if there was some type of injury. Payen definitively took his minutes away but he wasn't playing as good when he did see the floor.

That's what I thought too.

Re: 2017-2018 Vermont Catamounts

Contracts in.
Becker referred to all these games as long term contracts though who knows how long.
Vs Dartmouth. Every year.
Vs Qpac 12th in a row. New coach moving forward.
Vs Sienna 8th in a row.
@ Yale. 11th in a row. At least 2 more years as Becker confirmed the same Ivys.
@ Harvard. 7th in a row. At least 2 more years as Becker confirmed the same Ivys.

Possible Bahamas exempt tournament. It would make sense to try to get an Arkansas game around then for Henson.
We are trying to start a couple series (at least home and home) with a couple mid majors. A Pitt school makes sense for Urso.
We are trying to get 3 guaranteed games but none will be in New England.

If UVM were to schedule big games like against South Carolina, Providence, and Butler like they had this past season, they should schedule them earlier in the year right after one of the seasons opening tournaments. That's where you see a lot of upsets and better teams are still finding out their team chemistry and identity during that time so it gives UVM an early upset chance. For Example, the way Syracuse was playing early on in the season with a few bad losses to mid major teams is what killed their NCAA tournament hopes. I think if UVM played Syracuse earlier in the season they may have had a good chance to win which would have looked good come tournament time. We also need to play another team like Houston as UVM had that game won if we had just hit those 1-and-1 free throws late. Also the Northeastern game was in the bag but UVM had a defensive collapse in the second half. Some teams that I think UVM should play that are on the radar next year that would look good come tournament time is: Decent teams: UCONNreally struggled this past season will be better next year but not a huge difference)BOSTON COLLEGEthey play in a tougher conference but still not very good) Known Good Teams: MINNESOTAyoung team that Richard Pitino is still building, would be a good matchup.) CREIGHTONWell coached, probably losing Justin Patton to draft, and their PG/Best player last year Tore his ACL this past season but will be back next season, we will see if he's the same player he was.) Would these four OOC schedule games be good matchups for tougher games for UVM to play in? Also if they would win atleast two of the four how would that look come tournament selection time?

Becker has stated no big schools in New England will play him this year. I don't make the stuff up.

I'm surprised mo Watson JR is coming back given he was
a. Injured late in the season.
b. Has already sat out after transferring
c. They went forward with some felony rape charges

I mean I guess it's possible he actually didn't play enough games, waiver for his transfer or 6th year, and the charges were false.

There's hardly any big basketball schools in New England left....we'd roll BC and they haven't played us since we beat them.....UConn probably wouldn't want to play us now since they were really bad last year, and we've played them close in the past when they were really good..probably too risky now.

So only school left really is....URI? (Obviously Providence, who has been pretty game to plays us recently, and probably biggest program in NE right now)

Mo Watson was a RS senior last year and tore his ACL in January so imagine he's done...OP probably thought he was a Junior but that's in his name.

Okay so what schools do you think are good matchups outside of NE for UVM?

After watching you in person play the best team you played all season, I think Wills won't be as important for making a leap by beating P5 schools. He will be missed against anyone at or below your level to the degree he may be irreplaceable in one season.

He wash simply overmatched against high major talent because of his size. But against anyone else he is excellent.

Where I think UVM needs improvement is in perimeter shooting as a team. And not to say you don't have shooters. You do; you just don't have that guy that takes and makes that shot night after night.

Part of that may have been because you were basically unstoppable inside ten feet from the hoop so the game plan changed.

But watching you play Purdue made it obvious that you need someone else. I don't know if Steidl would have made the difference. He just doesn't shoot enough. Neither does Ernie to be honest.

It's hard to judge a team winning 21 straight as being flawed in some way but I think after this season and with what you have returning, you need a stopper and a legit shooter.

If you have any combination of those coming in or on your bench, there's no reason why you can't repeat and perhaps beat a P5 school. If not, you'll definitely be a favorite for the AEast but it might be tougher to repeat.

Right now, TBH, Duncan, Lamb, and Henson are the best starting four in the conference. If you guys got another Lamb to replace Steidl ... My goodness.

Re: 2017-2018 Vermont Catamounts

I think UVM will have even more shooters next season. EvD, Dalyrimple, Patella, Smith, Shungu, I'm probably forgetting someone, are all scorers. Dingba can score inside and defend anywhere. Fighting complacency and keeping the pedal to the metal may be this team's biggest tasks. We are losing a lot but probably gaining more.

Is it October yet?

Re: 2017-2018 Vermont Catamounts

I can confidently say there's not another Lamb walking through the door. However, someone posted the idea of playing Drew Urquhart (5), Henson (4), Lamb (3), Ernie (2), and TBH (1). If Drew comes in playing the way he did at the start of this season he would be an excellent addition to the starting 5. I think that line up would be terrific for rebounding and all the big guys can stretch the floor (even Urquhart).

Nate Rohrer is trusted by Becker to be a glue guy and understands our system. We also have Dingba available whose known for his defensive prowess. Finally the player that most resembles Kurt's game is Everett Duncan. Similar size and skill set. His freshmen year he gave us some good minutes and hit some big threes.

There are alot of options to fill that final starting spot but my guess is that will see a variety of guys taking the last starting spot until the right combination emerges.

Re: 2017-2018 Vermont Catamounts

There's alot of talent that sat on the bench this season due to our overall good health and depth. Hopefully guys are excited and ready to showcase their talent this season as there will be some minutes to go around with the loss of three important players.
