Maybe some...wouldn't move a needle for UA.

I'd take UVM's bench in Urquhart, Rohrer, and Dingba over Albany's Stire, Lands, and Charles any day....but that's just me.

Hopefully Dingba has been shadowing Payen all year, because that's the kind of best-case scenario development we should hope for with him.

I do not believe Dingba is nearly as good offensively as Payen was- Payen was very, very good an underrated offensively- legit automatic open jumper out to 18ft- but Dingba is a far superior defensive player and rebounder it's not even close. It took Payen a year to figure it our defensively, I don't anticipate the same curve for Dingba on that side of the ball.

Even though Dinga is pretty small for his position it's still good to have a defensive presence in the paint who can get rebounds and block. Lamb was the only consistent defender we had that gave bigs issues and he's small for the PF position too. I hope Dingba can develop a little bit offensively as well and be the next Payen for us.

Re: 2017-2018 Vermont Catamounts

Call me crazy but I'm not expecting much from Shungu (walk on) or Dalyrimple (only offer). Depth will certainly be something that we will have to wait and see what have. I'm more hopeful that Patella can come in and play solid minutes than some of our redshirts. Nash would definitely add some potential to the bench.

We went to an 8-man, really a 9-man rotation in basically the last 2 games of the year against Albany and Purdue- and one of those was because Kurt tore his ACL. So, 34 of the 36 games we played 10+ kids regularly, and being able to wear teams down and avoid the costs associated with injuries was a large part of why the team went 16-0 in conference.

If you look at the bench depth from every other team in the league- can't tell me UVM didn't have a tremendous advantage there- and still do.

On paper I agree not to expect much. I saw Shungu get some minutes in against Montreal in one of the scrimmage games in the early part of the season and he looks like he is a really good defender and has a quick first step. He may surprise us. I also played against Shungu in high school and AAU so I'm kind of biased when I say he's good, then again that was high school not college....Dalyrimple I haven't seen play, just high school highlights...can't really say much that I know about him other than he was a decent shooter from the perimeter and in high school and I saw some clips of him throwing down windmill dunks in practice while at UVM so he is obviously pretty athletic.

UVM has had a number of local guys who didn't look like much on paper but turned out to be very special. Tony Ociari, Clancy Rugg and Taylor Coppenrath come to mind. I have big hopes for Shungu.

Re: 2017-2018 Vermont Catamounts

I'm cautiously bullish on Shungu for a couple reasons:

a. He's gotten better every year
b. Impressed me in the exhibitions last year- granted, against sub-D1 teams but I liked what I saw from him.
c. Strong kid- has potential to be a very good on-ball defender.

That being said, at this point people shouldn't expect him to project more than a reserve PG at this point- especially considering Smith was one of the best guards in all of Canada last season.

Orciari was a big-time HS recruit and had interest from Wake Forest and Syracuse- recruiting-wise, he was a steal for UVM.

Rugg and Coppenrath fit the comparison a bit better.

That's the gap that will close this year with Albany. Again...UVM at home with all that depth, had to pull out ALL the stops to beat UA. In two of the three games UA had a lead late/very late in the game, what we didn't have is the depth and ran out of steam. We lost little to graduation.

Albany is much closer than people realize...next year will be a war.

It's a fact that you were down deep in the second half to Albany in 2 out of 3 games. Will be interesting.
