Missing a defensive assignment against Lyndon or Albany is still a missed defensive assignment. In the heat of the moment, a kid losing the shot motion or shot decision making that they worked on in practice is still valuable, even if it's not against Harvard.

I'm not opposed to D3 games generally. As long as big FBS schools schedule FCS schools I'm not going to ding Vermont for playing Lyndon.
IIRC Ryan Pierson's best game as a Catamount was against Lyndon.

So...there's always that, I guess.

Is there some reason that D2 schools are not played instead of D3?

Might lose.

Makes something that's already sad, sadder.

No one complains when they play St Mike's or some random Canadian team in the pre-season. Everyone understands it doesn't count. It's a scrimmage. It's fun.

The D3 game is ridiculous because they pretend it's a real game.

Not sure if it was posted here but per Abrami's article, the seeding for the Bahamas Tournament is going to be set by last year's final RPI. By virtue of that, UVM will be the 1 seed given its 45 RPI.

Pretty cool.

Vermont, and other AE teams, may want to consider hosting the mid/low-major subregional bracket for these early season tournaments.

Serious question: is it Patrick Gym that's holding back UVM getting quality OOC home games rather than recent success or geographic issues? I ask that because it's possible when the new gym gets built (whenever that is), UVM may be able to get those D1 home games they want.

The UVM record at home has been great for years, even against DI opponents. That at-home winning percentage has got to be one of the issues. However, it's one I want to continue forever.

Lot of these dynamics factor in, but so many of these mid-major/low D1 schools know what the bogey is for them to be safe with their ADs in terms of W/L that for the majority of them to take a trip up to Burlington and catch an L is inevitable and of so little value/benefit for them personally.

That, among other things, is the biggest reason.

Most road games are scheduled because there is 1 or more positives among the following reasons:

1. Money (guarantee)
2. Exposure (TV)
3. Recruiting base (speaks for itself)
4. Proximity

UVM and Burlington don't really benefit most visiting teams in any way, shape or form from that list so it's very hard to get home games. When you factor in the W/L record in Patrick, it really makes it that much more difficult.

If UVM has to play a D3 school to round out their home schedule at least play Middlebury, a D3 program that has a tradition of winning and pride.

Are you sure about that? How many 12-5 seed upsets have there been in the last 10 years? Anyone filling out a bracket knows there's pretty good odds picking the 12 over the 5. It's almost like the seeding committee wants that to happen. How many times has there been a 14-3 upset?

Here's the answer: http://mcubed.net/ncaab/seeds.shtml

Nice idea, but it cannot be done. Pretty sure the NESCAC doesn't allow teams to schedule games against teams in higher conferences. They have pretty strict schedule restrictions in terms of the number of games they are allowed to play, and when they can play them.

You're probably right. Back in Dec. of 2003 Williams upset Holy Cross! It snapped a 26 game winning streak at the Hart Center for the Crusaders. Williams had just won the National Title in the winter of 2003. Dave Paulsen coached both teams.

In fact, the game happened after Davidson cancelled with The Cross.

Re: 2017-18 America East OOC Schedules

There is only 2 ways UVM (or any other school) schedules HOME games:

1) Return a game to the school. This can be done in the same season, or in a subsequent season. Obviously, UVM has done this with Yale, NU, etc. They need to balance their 1 for 1 deals to ensure for every HOME game they get, they are going on the ROAD.

2) Buy a game. The only teams that are coming to Patrick without a return is a D-II or D-III school. Vermont can't afford to get any D-I team to play a game in Burlington without the promise of a return game, period.

----

CCSU has and will play Vermont, but it is going to require a return game in New Britain. With the Catamounts already traveling to Hartford for league play, and existing deals with opponents like Holy Cross, Yale, and Quinnipiac - the issue is more likely UVM doesn't want to sign a deal with CCSU, SHU, Bryant, etc., not the other way around.

For the record, CCSU has played just 1 non-Division I opponents at HOME in the last 21 seasons.
Dec. 29, 2013 vs. Albertus Magnus (D-III)
