Re: How fair is the Emaka and Shelden comparison
It will definitely be interesting:
Emeka Okafor
2001-2001: 7.9 PPG, 9.0 RPG, 4.06 BPG, 0.79 APG, 0.76 SPG, .590 FG, .620 FT
2002-2003: 15.9 PPG, 11.2 RPG, 4.73 BPG, 0.55 APG, 0.88 SPG, .580 FG, .599 FT
2003-2004: 17.6 PPG, 11.53 RPG, 4.08 BPG, 1.0 APG, 1.0 SPG, .599 FG, .518 FT
Shelden Williams
2002-2003: 8.20 PPG, 5.91 RPG, 1.58 BPG, 0.45 APG, 0.70 SPG, .516 FG, .625 FT
2003-2004: 12.60 PPG, 8.49 RPG, 3.0 BPG, 0.92 APG, 0.97 SPG, .586 FG, .690 FT
2004-2005: 15.5 PPG, 11.18 RPG, 3.70 BPG, 0.94 APG, 1.27 SPG, .582 FG, .662 FT
2005-2006: 18.7 PPG, 10.6 RPG, 3.8 BPG, 1.11 APG, 1.71 SPG, .584 FG, .740 FT
Numbers wise from their college days, they are very close. Emeka had a big jump from his freshman to sophomore year while Shelden gradually improved over his four years at Duke. Shelden became a different player between his sophomore and junior seasons though. I think the difference in his play as a sophomore and as a junior is the most marked difference, because he really became a better all around basketball player as a junior.
Based on size, they are very similar. Emeka measured out at 6'9.5" while Shelden is 6'8.5". Emeka was about 254 lbs while Shelden is 258 lbs. Emeka had a 7'4" wingspan while Shelden had a 7'4.5" wingspan. Emeka's standing reach was greater by a good bit, but I still don't believe Shelden's standing reach reports are accurate.
They had similar verticals. Shelden is quicker in the lane agility. I'm not sure what Emeka's full court time was though. Shelden had 25 reps to Emeka's 22 reps.
