Johnson's role on the team hasn't been defined. But he has a clue as to what will be asked of him as the U.S. team tries to regain it's place among the international elite after posting a disappointing 11-6 record in international competition the past four years.
"I know I'm here to play defense and make shots," Johnson said. "Other than, I don't have to use my off-the-dribble skills and all that. I'm here to play the game of basketball and have fun. And we just need to over there and take care of business."
Sounds like just what the doctor ordred. And it can only help him, playing next to and practicing against the best players in the world.
Congrats to Joe Johnson, Dwight Howard and the rest of the player who made it. Playing with the best players in the world will only make them better. I can't wait to get these games going. It will be interesting to see if Joe is still on the team when Kobe returns.
"I don't know if there can be a more solid player," Team USA coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "He can play four positions, he shoots, he defends and doesn't say a peep about anything. There's high maintenance, low maintenance and no maintenance. Joe's no maintenance... I think he's a star."
Joe Johnson on Chris Paul:
Quote:
Joe Johnson is getting a firsthand look — and an earful — about what it would be like to play with Chris Paul.
They're together at the USA Basketball national team tryouts, and Paul has not been shy about discussing his desire before the 2005 draft to play for the Hawks. Imagine, the Hawks captain and the NBA Rookie of the Year in the same backcourt.
"I told him to stop talking about it," Johnson said while shaking his head. "Seriously, I told him I don't even want to think about it anymore, what we could have done together. Because he's the truth. And I love Marvin [Williams, the player the Hawks took two spots before New Orleans selected Paul in the 2005 draft] like a brother, so don't think I don't appreciate what he's done and what he's going to do for us in the future.
"But me being out here with Chris Paul ... it's unbelievable how far ahead of his time he is as a player. The poise he has and making plays on defense and just being in the right spot. He definitely could have helped us [in Atlanta]. But that's a part of life. Some of the decisions that are made, you just have to live with it and move on."
