Hawks Billy Knight resigns

Atlanta Hawks general manager Billy Knight is stepping down.

The announcement comes after the Hawks forced the Boston Celtics to a Game 7 in a first round playoff series that ended Sunday.

He said Wednesday he is resigning from the organization effective July 1.

The 55-year-old Knight spent six years with the organization. His best season came this year, as the Hawks had a 37-45 regular season record and broke a nine-year playoff drought.

Knight says in a statement he's "leaving the organization in much better shape than it was in when I took over."

Re: Billy Knight resigns

He's actually put together a nice roster. It's weird he's deciding to resign as soon as he had a relatively successful season.

Re: Billy Knight resigns

It only took him seven seasons and they still don't have a winning record, good job.

Re: Billy Knight resigns

Next year the Hawks will be over .500. His only major mistake was not drafting Chris Paul.

Re: Billy Knight resigns

Drafting Shelden was a big mistake too. First he went wrong with Marwin as the PPA logic and fails when trying to draft by need. Other than that it was OK. He shred the awful mess Atlanta had and rebuilt from scratch. Traded a scrub and mid 1st pick for a young all-star and got talent with Smith and Horford who's better than many expected. Now there are quite few talented young players and no awful contracts. New GM has some stuff to play with.

His contract was going to expire this summer, so he probably decided he didn't have a future anymore with the organization.
