I've been following the A-10 since the league began as the ECBL and it is my opinion tha Phil Martelli has surpassed John Chaney as best coach in league history. Sure, Karl Hobbs is very deserving of the coach of the year award for this season, but to me Phil has done the best job over his career in the league. And that is saying something because I have tremendous regard for John Chaney and all he has done in his career. After all, John is truly deserving of being a hall of famer. I do like to kid around and post the Young Frankenstein photos, but the bottom line is just like John Chaney, Phil does a great job in developing talent year in and year out. My hat is off to Phil and his Hawks. You SJU fans are really lucky to have such a coach leading your program.

Re: The best coach in A-10 history
How can you say that Martelli has surpassed Chaney as best coach in conference history? Let's have Martelli come close to replicating the success of Temple from 1983-2001, and then we'll talk.

Right now Martelli is the best coach in the league in my opinion. For a career Chaney is far ahead of everyone.

Re: The best coach in A-10 history
If John had retired after 2001 I would still be calling him the best ever. But the fact is he has slipped considerably since then. If Phil slips to the same degree over the next 5 years I will readjust my opinion.

Re: The best coach in A-10 history
Martelli is a good coach. But his resume isn't near as good as Chaney. Let's see if Martelli can win 700+ games and get to the Final 8 4 more times before his career ends, then we can talk.

Re: The best coach in A-10 history
Chaney is the best coach in A10 history. Calipari with five straight regular season and tournament championships is probably the second best ever.

Re: The best coach in A-10 history
Martelli is the best coach in the conference today, although I think Miller could give him a run for the honor as we saw last night. Calling him the best coach in A 10 history above Chaney and Calpari is just plain stupid.
(1) Chaney, post season ever year but one since 1982, 21 A 10 semis, five elite 8s, and 700+ career wins.
(2) Calpari the only A 10 team to make the Final 4
Lets get real, Martelli could surpass Chaney and Calpari but he has a lot of work to do.

As someone said before...Martelli is better than Cheney right now...but has lots of work to do to suprass Cheney for career...

Re: The best coach in A-10 history
As good as Martelli is right now, SJU had a few lean years after Bey and Davis and co. left town. Once guys like O'Connor, Nelson, West, Carroll, et al. came onto Hawk Hill, the Hawks began their winning ways again.
As much as Temple is struggling right now, I don't believe Chaney has ever missed the postseason since he took over Temple.

Slipped? Like not making the tournament the last two years?
I'll admit Chaney isn't the same coach he wasn't was. But until 2001, it seemed like a given that he would be heading to the NCAAs.

Slipped? You mean like the Paterno-esque nose dive Temple hoops has taken the past few years?
Will there be 2000 in the house for Akron?

Re: The best coach in A-10 history
The fact of the matter is Phil revamped the Hawk offense this year in time for an 8 game run. Why wasn't it changed in January? I think he still has a learning curve.
