Re: Chaney Retiring
I think it is time. He is a great coach, and in most ways a good man, but even great masters have to hang it up sooner or later.
If true, going to be REAL interesting who the next head coach is, and whether Chaney will have any say. This is a huge hire for the league. Temple still has, by far, the best marketing name in the A-10.

Re: Chaney Retiring
No surprise if it is true.
There is probably no other single person as tied to the Atlantic 10 as John Chaney, in terms of longevity, identity and success. In a lot of ways he put the conference on the map. Everyone out there knows Temple and they know him.
He's the ultimate throwback, mostly because he's been there so long and never really changed. He didn't go to greener pastures for more money. He practices at some ungodly hour every morning. He stuck with a system that had been highly successful even when it wasn't as successful anymore. And I always felt that he wanted to do things the right way and wanted his kids to succeed in life as well as in basketball. It's too bad that goongate will now be part of his legacy but it showed a true side of him as well. He said and did what was on his mind and didn't give a damn what anyone else thought about it.
I don't know who the Owls will get to replace him, but they'll be filling some huge shoes. I worry about this for the league, because even a fading John Chaney is a better coach than a whole lot of other coaches out there. Who ever wanted to see the Owls in their bracket no matter what their record was? GW felt his bite this year, and I'll never forget him bouncing X in David West's senior year, a week after X had just beaten the Owls by about 20. X was never in the rematch.
With their lackluster fan support, this program is vulnerable to taking a big dive with a bad coaching choice now. I hope for all of our sakes that this doesn't happen.
Good luck Coach, and thanks for the memories!

Re: Chaney Retiring
no surprise at all and it's probably time but I'm going to miss some of his antics and his comments about the Rose Hill Gym. I always looked forward to Temple playing at Fordham just so I could watch Chaney. For better or worse, he's been the name and face mostly closely associated w/ the A-10 for the past 2 decades and this is the end of an era.

Re: Chaney Retiring
This could be tough not only for Temple, but also for the A-10. The record of coaches who follow legends like Chaney is not particularly good. More often than not, the first replacement doesn't do so well. Just look at what happened when Wooden retired, when Guy Lewis at Houston retired, when Vince Lombardi left the Packers. The list is quite lengthy.

I agree completely. What scares me is Temple falling off the face of the earth. The league needs a strong Temple and having Cheney retire, the league lost a huge marketing tool.

Re: Chaney Retiring
I would not be surprised; nor do I really care. Four years ago, I think many people revered him. Some mediocre seasons, some ranting press conferences, and the Incident all indicate he stayed too long.

Re: Chaney Retiring
From the Inquirer article announcing the 11 AM press conference:
Speculation about a successor has already begun. Among names mentioned: Penn coach Fran Dunphy, and Aaron McKie, who played for Temple and the Sixers. A recent blog mentions two dozen names, including Drexel coach Bruiser Flint; Portland Trailblazers assistant Dean Demopoulos, once Chaney's assistant and choice for successor; and current Temple top assistant Dan Lebovitz.

Re: Chaney Retiring
Hire Huggins. Bring in Mayo & Walker. Retain prominent brand name with coaching hire.
If you have a problem with Huggs' character, remember that Chaney is no angel either.
Personally, I'd love more Bobby vs Bobby.

Chaney is no angel, but nor is he the devil.

I fail to see the need for this post at all. The man is a Hall of Fame coach who is deciding to hang it up and move on. No need to try and tear him down and criticize him on this day.
