For All Who Hate Chaney
..and you know who you are on this board.
Excerpt from an article in today's Harrisburg Patriot News from writer David Jones:
"Chaney's problem was, so many people latched onto only what they wanted to see, what they wanted to hate. And they never had a chance or gave themselves a chance to see anything else. I can put all of that group in two categories: the simple and the ignorant."

Goon, I think you've grown soft in your old age. I've never seen this sentimental side of you. Usually you're on here trying to rile people up. Frankly, this scares me a little.

I have been feeling very sentimental yesterday and today. However, don't worry, it will soon pass (I hope) .

Re: For All Who Hate Chaney
I love writers who basically say "Here's my opinion and anyone who does not agree is an idiot."
I'm not a Chaney-hater, but I'm not going to gush over the guy either. There are some people who I'm sure feel they have legitimate reasons for not liking him, but how does that make you "simple or ignorant"?
This reminds me of ESPN's other recent love-fest, only Chaney's still kicking. Kind of like Jayson Stark saying "The world was a better place with Kirby Puckett in it". Unless you were the one being strangled or assaulted by him.

Re: For All Who Hate Chaney
John Chaney the "Good" Coach: Well Respected and Admired. HOF Coach. He taught disadvantaged inner city kids the value of a good education and gave them life skills to help them with their lives after college. Not always a role model though...
John Chaney the "Bad" Coach: Would have had much better case if he took complaints of officials to the media instead of "goonin' it up". His comments about the President were unwelcomed by local media at a sports banquet. His threats against a GW coach in the 80's and his outburst against Calipari in the 90's and his Goon-gate episode last year tarnished his rep and prevented him from being a great role model to go along with a great coach but he brought it on himself.
No one can question the fact that he helped put Temple on the map and his charitable efforts in the Philadelphia community. Chaney will be remembered as a good coach with a good heart but some strange behavior that kept him from being a local legend like Sonny Hill.

Not a role model? I guess you fall into No one can question the fact that he helped put Temple on the map and his charitable efforts in the Philadelphia community. After reading your post, it is apparent that you fall into one of the two categories stated above. Now go finish smoking your crack.
Chaney not a role model? Sonny Hill a bigger legend??

Re: For All Who Hate Chaney
Chaney could have been fired and possibly lost his HOF credentials for Goon-gate... what was Chaney thinking??

Re: For All Who Hate Chaney
I neither deny the man's very great accomplishments, nor do I overlook his very real shortcomings. I simply will greatly miss Chaney because he in one of the last, if not the last, of a dying breed -- the interesting man in sports, or at least the interesting coach. He was almost always great copy. To wit, a column in today's Buffalo News on his retirement: http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial...15/1041354.asp
An excerpt below about when he shadow-boxed with the Bona crowd. I could be wrong, but I think this was the first time he brought his team to Olean after Cookiegate:
Fans stood in line before games to get his autograph or just to say hello. I'll never forget a 2003 contest when Chaney stood in front of the Bona student section and started shadow boxing, much to the delight of the crowd.
"I've got to take the teeth out of them," Chaney explained later in his trademark raspy voice. "A lot of my guys have never seen craze and madness before. I don't care about all the big arenas we played in in the early part of the year. They haven't seen anything like St. Bonaventure.
"This is a haven for 40 minutes of hell. And when the game's over, the people are nice as hell. But during the game, boy, they're at you. They couldn't wait for me to come out. . . . That's why I came out boxing, but I made sure to do some bobbing and weaving."

Re: For All Who Hate Chaney
I remembered back in the 90s, he sat in the stands at GW during a women's game (part of a doubleheader) and would sign autographs, talk with the students, etc. That's what I'll always remember about him. I can't even think of any coaches today who would do the same type of thing.

Yes, it's always good to teach your students that if they don't like a call or something an opposing coach says, they should handle it like a man and threaten to kill them or try to choke them at half time.
Chaney had his flaws. And since they were usually in front of cameras or reporters, you look like the ignorant one when you pretend they never happened. That doen't mean that he wasn't a great coach for three decades. It just means he wasn't the saint you are trying to incarnate.

Re: For All Who Hate Chaney
BSetMeUp, it is not even worth it to argue with GOON. When someone doesn't have an argument they turn to name calling.

Until your unwelcome appearance on this board, the tone of the messages was generally civil. If you are attempting parody, it is not working. If you are a goon, I suggest to the monitors to consider a warning & then a cut off. There is quite enough crudeness around without your oafish comments.
