State of Mass to name Basketball the state sport

Quote:
AP - Despite lengthy convincing, the state of Massachusetts will name basketball its state sport rather than baseball.

Most basketball historians agree that the game was invented by James A. Naismith in 1891 in Springfield.

Does this maybe benefit the Minutemen in any way?

It is just another stupid unneeded thing the Massachusetts legislature got involved in recently. I guess they could allocate some time to this dumb topic since the effort to ban marshmellow fluff sandwiches in public schools was tabled. Believe it or not, fluff was a big topic on Beacon Hill at the statehouse back in June.

Re: State of Mass to name Basketball the state sport

not to ruin your pointless dig at the senators, but this was handled by the state senate and governor

this is such a bad idea

what pro sport is the most popular? BASEBALL

what high school and college sport is the most popular? HOCKEY

and then you have the patriots....making basketball clearly the #4 sport in Massachusetts, and probably the rest of New England except for Conn. I hope romney rejects this stupid proposal

Hmmmm....not sure why your bringing Kerry and Kennedy into this...neither the basketball or the fluff has anything to do with either.

as for the Big Dig, the Big Dig has pretty much exclusively been under the control of elected Republicans, whether in the executive branch of the Commonwealth or the funding from a Republican US Congress, for the entire history of its actual construction. The general contractor, Bechtel, is one of the staunches Republican-supporting corporations in the modern history of the US corporate political involvement.

let's see...George Shultz and Cap Weinberger - former Bechtel board members.
former Big dig human resources manager - Margaret Shultz - George's daughter.

In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the Big Dig oversight falls under the Transportation Secretary who is appointed by the Governor. The Turnpik Authority is the direct supervisor. the chairman of the Turnpike authority is appointed by the Governor. The Big Dig construction began in 1991. The Governor of Massachusetts has been a Republican for the entire period of construction.

The majority of the funding comes from the Federal Government. For the vast majority of the construction period, there has been either a Republican President or a Republican-controlled Congress, or both.

Do you get your "information" from Fox News?

I could understand Kansas doing this, but Massachusetts? Like Rhodyman said basketball's not even the second most popular sport in MA.

Nothing the Massachusetts Legislature does ever benefits the University of Massachusetts. To the Students, their parents, and the Alumni, they are Public Enemy Number One.

Do you get your "information" from Fox News?

We all know Massachusetts is a communist state. How else could Kennedy and Kerry get elected. Why did you mention Fox News? Fox News didn't cut over 12,000 jobs from their workforce but the NY Times did.

The point is that the Big Dig was a BIG FRAUD that stole Federal dollars. Mass Guv is Republican in name only (is he a conservative?). Kennedy and Kerry definitely got kickbacks and other perks for keeping the project going.

A communist state with a Republican governor? And one (Mitt Romney) who is a leading contender for the GOP presidential nomination in '08? Hah!

Chill out, dude. We can't all come from a state with a tool bag senator like Santorum. And soon, you won't have him either!

You are way off. The governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney, is not a Republican in name only. He is currently running for president as a Republican. If anything, he masked his conservative views to get elected governor and now has taken a decidedly right turn (probably back to his real views) since he announced he would not seek reelection but instead run for President.

The state of Massachusetts is on its 4th straight Republican governor. The last Democrat that held the office was Mike Dukakis and he departed in 1990. UMass87 is correct in that the Big Dig project has been entirely managed by Republican administrations and a republican leaning company was put in charge of it. Are you suggesting that only Democrats are corrupt and waste taxpayers money? It goes both ways.

As for Kerry and Kennedy, they really have not been involved much with the project since getting it funded. You can blame them for getting the funding through congress that but they don't deserve to be beat up for the mismanagment of the project.

Go ahead and and take shots at Massachusetts and its senators if it make you feel good. I would still rather have these two as my senate representation over someone like Pa's own Rick Santorum.

Re: State of Mass to name Basketball the state sport

All this Political Talk reminds me of an joke that older Philly residents may remember (My mother's side of the family all live in the area, so it's a second home to moi) :

Q: What's the difference between Bud Dwyer and Bud Lite?
A: Bud Lite has a head on it. (chortle).

Dwyer was one in the long, storied list of crooked PA politicians, who got his hand caught in the cookie jar. Standup guy that he was, he pulled out a gun during a press conference and, well, the punchline covers it. Philly in particular is famous for having the most corrupt goverenment in the land, it's pretty funny to hear someone from that area ripping MA politicians.
