This Shining Moment
That's what they call this, right? This Shining Moment?
I hate that crap. I don't want incessant cutaways of the coaches wives. I don't want multiple shots of kids at the end of the bench waving their towels. I don't want to hear every tangential heartwarming story. I don't want montage after montage, capped by a montage of swelling, cheesy music with the same three final shots that they've played for the past 18 years (... 3. Star player on losing team falling to the floor with his head in his hands... fade to 2... Star from the winning team pumping his fist with a thats-what-I'm-talikn-bout grimmace... fade to 1... coach and team with championship hats holding up the trophy).
I am very, very excited about this game. I'd like to feel like I'm watching a basketball game, and not some freaking pagent. I'd like the focus to be on the court and not on a hundred human interest stories. I want to see defense and offense and sweat and hustle and strain and intensity and despair and joy. I just want it to be real and not manufactured.
I also want to see cheerleaders (the only reason I could have tolerated a UCLA win on Saturday).
I'd love to see a light fixture drop on Billy Packer's head at the first mention of Duke and/or Tyler Hansboro, but maybe that's asking too much.
This is a great showcase for our great game. Hope its more about the game and not about some CBS sitcom star who got courtside seats, even though they don't know the difference between between a pick and roll and a California Roll.
Roll out the ball, let the kids play, and let me enjoy a freaking basketball game.
