Xavier's Mark "Cheeks" Lyons

Here's a nice little video of the next starting PG, imo, for Xavier.

He looks to have great handles and athleticism. He' 6'1 and can jump out of the gym.

Check out the 1:24 mark.

Although it pains me to say it, let me be the first dayton fan to admit that this kid looks pretty impressive.

Re: Xavier's Mark "Cheeks" Lyons

Everything I've read about this kid suggests he's a turnover machine and player who doesn't always give full effort. Miller is unlikely to play any guard immediately who does both of those things (Raymond found that out his first year owing to his shoddy defense). I would not be surprised if Lyons didnt play much at all as a frosh. He's not a true point or a top outside shooter. Holloway seems to be the better option at point and Jackson or Graves will have a leg up at shooting guard. Lyons is very talented and athletic, but we'll have to see how quickly he adapts to the Xavier way of doing things (one of which is being smart with the ball).

That was a fun video to watch. Look forward to seeing him play next year.

The video was impressive but one thing that stood out to me is that they didn't show one highlight of a pass. Looked more like a shooting guard than and nothing like a point guard to me.

Re: Xavier's Mark "Cheeks" Lyons

I agree with WH, I don't see Lyons being the starting PG or even seeing minutes there. It's gonna be Holloway and if he can't handle it then I think Dante gets the nod. Lyons won't get more than 3-7 mpg if he doesn't play any defense. The kid can break you down on offense though.

The last freshman to get serious PT for X was David West. That is X's mold and I don't see it changing soon. It also explains why X rarely gets consideration for all freshman teams.

Actually REF, the last signifigant impact freshman for X was Stanley Burrell. He started 24 games and averaged some serious minutes and scored 12 pts average.

I don't know where Lyons fits in right at this time. One thing is clear to me though, if anyone can coach up a guard to get better defensively and be a better passer, it's Miller.

I'm a big believer in not expecting much from freshmen, however for Xavier to be successful next season, at least two of the five we have coming in need to produce at a high level.

You might want to watch it again.

Re: Xavier's Mark "Cheeks" Lyons

Without much evidence to go by except for a few video clips and some recruit stories, Holloway and Walsh are the frosh guards who seem to be the most ready to fit in with the returnees. Someone has to back up Holloway, though, if he wins the starting PG job. It will be interesting to see how Redford performs. Sounds like he's a very heady player, which would endear himself to Miller.

Re: Xavier's Mark "Cheeks" Lyons

I agree, WH, but Redford is a pure SG. I can't see him running the offense, but I do believe he'll get more minutes than many of the Xavier fans are predicting. I hear that the X coaching staff is salivating at the possiblity of Frease in the post drawing defenders in and then kicking it out to Redford for that deadly shot of his. Frease is a good passer by all accounts, so this scenario might play itself out with some success.

Re: Xavier's Mark "Cheeks" Lyons

I have no idea how it is going to shake out. It seems we have three candidates that could play some at point and they are all Freshman. I can't wait to see how it shakes out.

If one man doesn't emerge early I could see Miller splitting time pretty evenly. He likes depth and I see us substituting quite liberally at every other position.
